Figured I'd start a world cup thread with this bombshell. Landon Donovan is not in the 23 man roster. People will complain about Julian Green getting picked over him, but he bigger head scratcher (to me) is Brad Davis. I've never seen anything from him with the USMNT that would warrant making the final roster. At least Green is an unknown to all of us. I also would have gone with Boyd over Wondo, just to have the aerial threat, but that isn't a huge deal. http://www.espnfc.com/news/story/_/...ovan-maurice-edu-left-world-cup-squad?cc=5901 To Landon, thanks for the past decade and specifically for this:
I was surprised because of who he is to us soccer. But he isn't the same Donovan from 4 years ago. He's out of his prime now.
He played very well in the Gold Cup last summer. Bold move by Klinnsmann, because if this team doesn't advance, or at least be competitive, he's likely to not be around for the 2018 World Cup. I'd still like the option of having Lando coming in late in a game for an offensive push.
This news is surprising, but I'm not really shocked though. I'm thinking Julian Green must have gotten a promise of a WC roster spot, if he declared for the the US team instead of Germany. I can't see how Green will be more valuable in this world cup than Donovan, even if LD is playing at at 70% of his former self. Congrats to Chris Wondolowski and Brad Davis though, both excellent MLS players.
I don't see the big deal. We got a bad draw and probably aren't gonna make it out of the group, might as well give some young guys experience for the next run around.
Probably not going to advance regardless of if Donovan were on the roster. Came into camp out of shape anyways, it's on him.
Champions League final was epic. Atletico Madrid ran out of gas, but if Sergio Ramos doesn't hit the header in the 94th minute, they would have won. Instead, the deeper and more talented team dominated in ET.
I was the bad luck charm. I didn't start watching until the 80th minute. Trying to play Costa cost them. It basically cost them a sub and the whole time I was watching, they were clearly spent. Once Ramos hit the header, it was was going to take a miracle by Atletico to pull it out. I'm a Barca fan, but I was glad that Atletico won at least the League this year. With their goalie most likely going back to Chelsea and Costa going somewhere too (might be Chelsea as well), this might be their last season at the top. Simeone lost his shit at the end. I wonder what Verane said/did to him. Oh, and does Ronaldo have no clue why people dislike him? His celebration was clearly planned the moment he got tripped up. Yes, we know you are fit as fuck. You don't have to show us.
I like the US team. They play rougher than other countries teams. How wasn't that a goal by Altidore?
Yeah, that was a weak "push" by him. To be fair though, I think he did commit a handball immediately after the whistle, so the goal probably wouldn't have counted anyways. He was playing a lot better than the first game, but still needs to score to get his confidence up. I can't wait until the WC actually starts. For anyone who didn't see the game, here is Fabian Johnson's ridiculous goal.
