"Is the Jesus Montero era about to begin sooner than expected?

The competition for the Yankees' backup catching job is wide open after Francisco Cervelli was diagnosed with a fractured left foot Friday, an injury that will sideline him for the next 6-to-8 weeks.

The question now becomes: Who will take his place behind starter Russell Martin?

"We still have plenty of guys here that could earn that spot," Joe Girardi said. "Basically what it does is it probably eliminates one catcher (Cervelli) from the Opening Day competition."

While Montero - the team's top prospect - Austin Romine and even Gustavo Molina will get their chance, one thing is clear when it comes to the backup job: Jorge Posada is not being considered."
