The New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 11-0. Starting for the Yankees was Phil Hughes and he pitched very well for the win.

It looked like it was going to be a pitching battle between Phil Hughes and Edwin Jackson but the Yankees blew it open with a 10 run 7th inning.

Phil Hughes showed a lot of confidence on the mound and threw with purpose. He was working his fastball on both sides of the plate and his cutter was working very well. He threw a knuckle curve and he threw a lot of cutters. He had a nice mix of pitches.

In the 4rth inning Phil Hughes walked Brandon Inge to load the bases loaded and he showed great composure. He threw a cut fastball to jam Josh Anderson to get out of the inning. Phil Hughes came into the game with more weapons and he seemed to find the ability to refine his weapons to get people out. Phil Hughes was on the attack and seemed in the zone. It seemed like he didn’t worry about the Yankees’ losing streak and he just pitched his game.

Mark Melancon had a nice simple motion with good arm action and a nice biting curve ball. He can tell that he will strike out a lot of batters.

Edwar Ramirez needs a third pitch to reach the upper level. He needs another pitch to protect his circle change up which could be the best circle change in the major leagues. Once he develops one or two more pitches, the ceiling for him should be high.

When Jose Molina hit the grand slam, he had to know that a fastball was coming to him because the pitcher just walked Melky Cabrera to load the bases. That showed good veteran awareness.

Batters 4 through 8 had a great hitting night and it was only a matter of time before the Yankees would turn the tables on another team by scoring a lot of runs.
