Update: Yi signs with the Bucks

MILWAUKEE -- Yi Jianlian is going to play for the Milwaukee Bucks after all.

Yi, the sixth overall selection in the NBA draft in June, signed a multiyear contract with the Bucks in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

"There has been a genuine excitement throughout our city and state, as well as internationally, following our selection of Yi in the NBA Draft," Bucks owner and team president Herb Kohl said. "We all anticipate Yi's arrival and welcome him and his family to Milwaukee. We look forward to a successful relationship for many years to come."

The 6-foot-11 forward had been reluctant to sign with Milwaukee. His agent, Dan Fegan, had pushed for a trade to a city with a large Asian influence, or at least a larger city.</div>

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> While nearly every other first-round draft pick quickly signed contracts and reported to work with his respective new employer, Yi and the Bucks remained in limbo.

Not for long. Sources tell Sporting News that halfway around the world a major shift in the Yi situation is taking place, one that should eventually result in the Bucks getting their man. On Wednesday morning in Hong Kong (that's Tuesday evening here in the U.S.), Yi will be present at a meeting that should go a long way toward finally sealing his NBA future. A contract agreement still could be weeks away, but this meeting would be the first step leading to that contract.

Two contingents are scheduled to be at the meeting. One will be from the Bucks and will notably include Kohl, the team's owner. General manager Larry Harris and two lawyers representing the team also will be there, but Kohl's involvement in the negotiations is expected to be the key to unlocking the Yi stalemate. As the weeks have passed, Kohl has gotten more involved in finding a way to bring Yi to Milwaukee.

Scheduled to meet with the Bucks is Chen, who received a letter two weeks ago from Kohl, paving the way for this Yi summit. Representatives from the Chinese Basketball Association are expected to be in the meeting, too. Yi's agent, Dan Fegan, will be there.

The Bucks could not be reached for comment Tuesday for an update on the negotiations, but the discussions are expected to go all day Wednesday. The chief topic will be Yi's development. Salary, marketing agreements, endorsement opportunities -- a source says that all will be secondary to the basic problem of playing time. Yi has gotten accustomed to the fact that he will be playing in a cold-weather city with few citizens of Chinese descent. He didn't have much choice. The Bucks, barring a trade, would hold his NBA rights as long as he continues playing professionally overseas. </div>

I don't know how much we can rely on Sporting News to report this but if this is true, this is a big step that can get Yi to play for the Bucks after all of this. Pretty much because it seemed like Yi's reps didn't even want to step foot in the state of Wisconsin, but now that they will seem to listen, it will get Yi closer to signing a deal.

He's a very good 7 foot player who can hit the 3. They didn't know he wasn't going to play for them. That's like saying id Durant becomes a bust, then why did Seattle pick him, they didn't know. So, Yi was a good pick, his agent was just being a douche bag.
