Young hitters make McGwire proud

    With apologies to Albert Pujols, who puts up monster numbers every year, the two hitters who have posted perhaps the most stunning seasons in the last 40 years for the Cardinals were in the opposite dugouts Sunday.

    Mark McGwire, who broke the home-run record at 70 in 1998, now is the Cardinals' hitting coach and for much of the Cardinals' erratic offensive season, people have wondered what kind of job he actually was doing.

    Joe Torre, who turned 70 on Sunday, is the Los Angeles Dodgers' manager and was warmly cheered by the Busch Stadium crowd when that announcement was made after the fifth inning of Sunday's game. Many of them remembered Torre's almost unbelievable Most Valuable Player season of 1971, when he hit a National League-high .363 and drove in 137 runs while playing here.
