Brad Johnson is old as dirt... but he'll be the backup this year.

Bartel hasn't really impressed me much this year or last year.

Miami has Pennington (lock), Henne (lock), and Beck/McCown fighting for the next QB position. One could get cut/traded.

Tampa has Garcia, Griese (FA signee, so I assume this is a lock), and Josh Johnson (draft pick). This means Simms and Gradkowski are on the outside, looking in.

I'd love to see us get someone like Beck, McCown, or Simms.

I'd love to see us give a look at Simms. I've always liked him since he was in college and he could definitely be a damn solid backup for Romo.

Apparently, we have scouted both Simms and Beck (IIRC).

Def. something to keep an eye on, for sure...

You might have to fight New England for Simms. I've been hearing his name a lot as an upgrade for the Patriots.

Would you trade a 4th for Beck, which is apparently what Parcells is asking for? I think that's a bit too high for a team with no leverage (due to the abundance of QB's once Pennington came aboard), but I wouldn't feel bad about parting with a 5th.

    Interesting.

NE has Brady as a lock (obviously). Apparently, Guerttiez (or however its spelled) has looked good.... and they spent a draft pick on O'Connell.

Cassell is on the outside looking in... another possibility.

All 3 of New England's backups have looked terrible, actually. Cassell is the worst, O'Connell is the best. But I think they feel O'Connell is too green to be the backup.

A 4th round pick seems too high for a backup QB, especially one that lacks the experience that Beck does. He also never really looked all that great last year when he did get the opportunity to play. I'd probably be ok with a 5th rounder, but a 4th seems like a reach for us to give up for a backup, especially considering he would only see the field in mop-up duty.

I was just going off what I was told. I haven't actually seen them play.

But I do agree; O'Connell is too green to be a backup QB on a contending team. They'll probably want someone with some experience; and Simms would make sense.

We were set to take John David Booty before Minnesota did. I think its a pretty good move, actually, if we took a mid round QB. We just didn't get the opportunity to.

I wouldn't be upset with trading a 4th for Beck.

Beck was a 2nd rounder a year ago, has some talent, and is young. We are looking for someone to groom as a backup; so whomever we acquire for that role will be young and with little to no experience.

The difference with Simms or McCown is that they are ready to be backups now and for the future. And maybe...they could push Johnson this year (although, I think Brad would still be the primary backup QB this year).

I guess the way to look at it is like this:

We have our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks next year. Plus, Cleveland's 3rd, our 4th, Detroit's 4th, our 5th, Miami's 6th, and our 7th.. plus compensatory picks for Jacques Reeves, Keith Davis, Julius Jones, and possibly Nate Jones.

I am not entirely sure that's accurate... but its pretty close. Point being, we are going to have something like 12-13 draft picks next year. We simply don't have the room for that many rookies. We'll have to trade away some for future picks, consolidate some picks... and an area where we do have room is backup QB; why not trade for one?
