Well Orlando is clearly retarded for giving Rashard that kind of money and not even being interested in Vince. But if they were sensible and Vince asked 12 mill per year for 4 years. Vince would definitely provide a lot more than Rashard will for 20 mill per year over 4 those years. Vince is just as good a 3 point shooter, and gets less open looks, he draws double teams and is a better passer.

I think they were looking for more of a spot up shooter. Vince would take away touches from Dwight and Hedo in order to be effective.

And overall, I think Carter's "soft" label really scared them away.

    i dont know about that...

vince would only make dwight better and hedo would be a 3rd option yes. vince is known around the league as a true team player. i am pretty sure they werent thinking "oh, vince will take all the shots"...he would do quite the opposite. he was the only player in the league to diss kobe's 81 pt game saying that team ball is important. people hate vince for not being more aggressive at his own shot.

the whole fools gold comment is bogus too. i remember hearing that GM saying later that he didnt mean carter sucked, he meant that if they did trade for him, he would bolt and run to another team that summer. so its fools gold they get him for a half a season and then he leaves.

vince pretty much immediately signed with the nets cause he is loyal to them and i think the league knew rod and vince were friends and he liked it there and kidd wanted him back...

yeah his soft label is pretty lame too.....he is one tough cookie if you actually watchi his games *COUGH MAGIC JOHNSON COUGH*

But like I said, I think they were looking for more of a spot up shooter like Shard.

Which makes no sense. LA was losing until Kobe took over. How is that his fault?

I can't recall what you're talking about. When was this comment made?

It's not like he had a choice. No other team was jumping at him.

Well Vince is a career 37.5% 3 point shooter, and Rashard is a career 39% 3 point shooter. However Vince has been the #1 offensive option pretty much everywhere he has been and has drawn a lot more attention than Rashard has during their entire careers. I'd argue that Vince is just as good a 3 point shooter as Rashard is.

Vince taking away shots from Dwight and Hedo could be true, last year Vince averaged 17 FGA/game, while Rashard averaged 14 FGA/game. So he would take a couple more shots. But I mean, I doubt they would mind much, outside of Dwight and Hedo, who do they want to be taking a lot of shots?

Something that Vince would be a big asset is Vince's ability to create a shot, and his passing, he averaged 5.1 apg last year, and Rashard has never averaged more than 2.4 apg in his career.

but vince can do so much more than rashard....its hard to imagine a team wanting a worse player. vince is a better passer and inside player and clutch player.

    this is what vince said:

“The only bad thing about it is that younger kids, whose minds are easily warped, are going to think, ‘Ohhh! I am going to go out there and do it instead of (honoring) the team concept first. That is what is missing in the game, guys understanding how to play as a team.

“I think it is great for (the NBA): They want scoring, they want ratings, and you are going to get that. You are definitely going to get them now with the amount of 50-point games, 60-plus games. I just hope that kids and young guys understand that (only) special guys can do that. Yeah, the (other Lakers) were trying to get Kobe the ball, they wanted to see a special night. But they all know their roles.

“Guys understanding their roles is probably the hardest thing to accept in the NBA right now. Everybody wants to prove they are a professional, wants to be a star in this league. You can still become a star in your own right if you just play your role.”

i agree with what he said....of course it was spectacular what kobe did and im still in awe of it, dont get me wrong, but that is the kind of guy vince is. a real team guy and who actually believes in the team concept. that is how he was taught in high school and college.

during jan/feb of 07 when the trade deadline was near, and vince still wasnt sure if he was gonna resign, orlando magic GM said that carter was "fool's gold" an they werent interested in him. carter haters around the world rejoiced that they had someone on their side and threads starting popping up saying "SEE???? the league hates carter and he is a soft, weak etc" but i was just saying later that GM clarified that statement referring to him leaving for another team...not him as a player.

we will never know. a player averaging 25ppg is a free agent, its hard to imagine NOBODY wanting him ..... i dont know what teams were interested in him....maybe they already knew he was signing back in jersey...were just fans, im sure rod and vince know the truth.

Wasn't it the Orlando front office/management that called Vince "fools gold"?

Vince is in a great position for him.

This version of the Nets has no pressure and he is free to put up all of the pretty stats that he wants. Hopefully they are pretty enough that his trade value increases to something decent.

Additionally, Vince has learned from earlier in his career and he is now a good teammate and he understands what he needs to do for these young guys on and off the court.

It's not always about choosing the best players. Other aspects need to be taken into consideration.

None of this should be directed at Kobe. Other than #8, everyone wearing an LA uniform was struggling, and the team was down by 10+ points. Kobe went on to do extra scoring in order to relieve his teammates. Shouldn't that be considered "team player-like" too?

I can't seem to remember this, so I can't properly comment.

Only three teams were mentioned as likely destinations for Carter, NJ, Charlotte, and Orlando. Only one made an offer we know about. Even if a team knows that a player wants to sign with a different club, they would offer him a deal. How do they know he doesn't jump ship?

exactly. vince can do it all and do more than rashard. a VC howard combination? killer! hard to imagine not wanting that.

Its all someones opinion of course. in a way, yes, your right, it is a team play. but that attitude is not always the best attitude. kobe is known for trying to take over and do too much. but last year, he stopped doing that and he was the mvp.

sometimes, less is more my friend. and last year proved it with kobe.

no way to know that. hey, remember when carter was looking to be traded back in 2004? new jersey was NOT mentioned in the teams. it was Portland, memphis and new york. so we never know...maybe a team like philadelphia would want vince if he was available. its never as clear cut as you say.

What do you mean exactly? Your comment doesn't correspond with mine.
Consider for a minute what kind of players he had that year. Smush Parker, Bynum (undeveloped), Medvedenko, Cook, George, Green, Profit, etc. This season, his teammates shared the load, most notably, Bynum. And when he went down, LA acquired Pau Gasol.

Right, it can go either way.

you said other aspects need to be considered. its not always about the best player. i agree. adding kobe to a team like detroit would be the worst thing. but adding an all around player like vince carter to a team like orlando who doesnt have a player like vince on their team would be killer. thats a deadly inside out combo. i think its a mistake for olando NOT to want vince who is very unselfish, if that is your concern of course...

agreed. i love that 81 pt game and i agree he had to do it to win. i watched it live. basically what i am trying to get it is that vince was the only one to really speak up about remembering to play a team game. that is how much of a team player he is. that is what i am trying to get out of the 81pt analogy..that vince is not a player looking to take shots, he is all about the team.

When it comes down to it, I still believe Orlando was afraid to sign Carter. He's getting older, and losing his athleticism. And it's not like he was looking for small pay, either.

Otis Smith might not publicly call Carter "soft", but that might have still been an issue.

This can also be a problem. There have been numerous occasions where NJ needed Vince to pour on points, and he failed to do so. He's capable of scoring 30+ points on any given night. So if he is all about the team, why is he failing to do what the team is asking?

very well could be. the only thing i would say to that is look at the season he just had. played every single game, got his team to the 2nd round, shattered all records in nets franchise, averaged 25ppg, was insansely clutch in the season, had plenty of dunks.....i could understand if he had a season like he had this year...but man, carter was one of the best in the league when he was a free agent. money was not an issue, they signed lewis for wayyyy too much. every player gets older, yes. but with age, comes experience and locker room leadership.

im sure it was an issue.

i agree. like i say numerous times its a problem with him too. when you have the talent of kobe bryant, and you dont use it, you get criticized a lot and with good reason. the biggest problem i have with vince is why doesnt he play like he does in the 2nd half of the season in teh 1st half of the season.

that is just the nature of vince. its part of his psyche. he wants to share the wealth, and get people invovled before he takes over. he needs to find the balance of when to take over and when not to. so in that aspect, i agree with you.

its a great aspect to have but it can also be a problem. he needs to balance it and that is why he gets so much s*it. i think vince is not comfortable taking every shot and dropping 50. he has said before, "i can drop 50 but thats just 50 points...we still need another 50 points to compete in the game" or something like that. he is very aware of his teammates and how much they mean to a team that he sometimes loses sight that you need to score.

when you have all the scoring talent in the world, and you dont utilize it for whatever reason, your gonna get beat up and vince knows that but he cant change who he is. he has always been like that.

The season "he just had"? If you're referring to last season, I'm confused. He was no where to be found in the first half of the season, and didn't even make the playoffs.

If you're talking about the season before he become a free agent, he did disappear in the playoffs.

That's why he will always get criticized.

"got his team to the 2nd round"?

The Nets have traded all three guys that got Nets into the '07 playoffs 2nd rd.

Carter was pitiful in the '07 playoffs. Pitiful. That is without question, and a BIG reason no team wanted him in the '07 offseason.

yeah if you look at the stats i said, they were of the season he had when ORL was interested in signing him.

he disappeared vs cavs is game 5 and 6. games 1-4 he did okay and in game 3 he was big in getting them a win. he was teriffic vs the raptors. he some of his best performances.

but unfortunately, people only remember your latest games so to the public, it looked like he sucked, yeah cause he had 2 awful games in a row.

oh there is plenty of question. he was great in round 1 and had 2 pretty bad games in 5 and 6 like i said above. game 1, he had IDENTICAL stats to lebron. game 2, he was aggressive but got no calls. game 3, he played great and the team won. game 4, shot was not going down but he was really trying and made a huge f*ck up on the last play. game 5 and 6 he was totally out of it and sucked.

i just cant believe that a dude with the numbers and the attitude vince has had NO interest in him. yet someone like rashard lewis gets all the attention....i highly doubt that. i personally think it was pretty clear that vince was coming back to jersey seeing that he resigned days after opting out.

    ditto. you cant please everyone.

Check games 1, 2 & 6. It was embarrassing to have to be rooting for him.
