You are starting a team. You can pick any three positions to build your roster around. Just list the positions and why. NOT actual players. (I'll list mine later; I don't want to influence anyone. I have that awesome kind of power)
gotta be mlb, able to pressure the passer, stop the run, and fall back in coverage. left tackle (if the qb's a righty) able to give the quarterback unlimited time from his blind side, anchor the running game. defensive end, disrupt the opponents offense with penetration and pressure.
without putting a whole lot of thought into it i'd go with a quarterback and two dominant defensive lineman. the qb controls the offense and touches the ball every play so he's obviously pretty important. and if the defensive line can control the line of scrimmage, they are able to shut down the running game and put pressure on the opposing qb in passing situations.
Quarterback - Obvious Left Tackle - A rock-solid left tackle will practically ensure your QB's safety from his blind side (right tackle if your QB is a lefty). Its been shown time and time again that LTs anchor the line and in some cases the offense as a whole. Defensive Tackle - A run-stuffing DT provides a crucial element to a good defense - stopping the run. When you can force your opponent to pass, you make things a lot more difficult for them. And you'd be surprised how a DT can affect the MLB the rest of you are so keen on taking.
QB - WELL DUH, can make up for a lot of weaknesses in other areas Linebacker - a great one makes the defense great IMO Left Tackle - assuming your QB is right handed, protecting his blind side is a must.
QB: Obvious MLB: Defensive captain RB: Takes the pressure of the QB If head coach counts, I'd pick that too.
I agree with Jacoby. I'm gonna have to go with Andy Reid's "philosophy," which is you build from your line. LT DT QB
QB, LT, pass rusher I don't really care where that pass rusher plays. Most likely, it will be a DE in a 4-3 or an OLB in a 3-4.
Why is everyone so hung up on middle linebackers? You put a quality DT in front of them, and you can make a relatively average LB look pretty good. Christ, the Williams guys in Minnesota have made a decent player out of E.J. Henderson.
QB, DE, CB A shutdown CB takes away half the field and makes it a lot easier to stop people. A great rush end can make the rest of your line look like pro-bowlers. A great QB can overcome a lot of deficiencies in the rest of the offense - yes - even the line. If I were building a team, I'd start with locking up good O-Linemen long term (familiarity is more important than having pro-bowlers) and stocking up on pass rushers. But since I can only have three positions, I chose the ones that can make the most mediocre teammates look good.
I don't get how it doesn't go QB, LT, DE/OLB (depending upon 43-34) QB- Obvious reasons. LT- One of the most important positions in football; you need to stop the pass rush in order to protect the QB and win. An elite LT does that. DE/OLB- depending upon which defense.... a guy who gets you double digit sacks is very important. Getting a pass rush neutralizes a lot of things.
Elvis Dumervil got like 12 sacks last year didn't he? You can get sacks guys later on. Rock-solid Dtackles are much harder to find and are more valuable (IMO).
I'd have to go with QB, LT or RB (depending on the QBs handedness), and an OLB - that way I can have pass rush and the ability to cover relatively well.
Every year, someone pops up and does that. Not every year, do you get a great pass rusher who does it on a continual basis. Those are pretty hard to find.
everybody is saying qb...for "obvious reasons". whats to say that a qb can not be found later on? ALOT of good qb's are 2nd-6th round picks.
