“I truly believe that I am a better player than Pose. I don’t want to toot my own horn and make it sound like that, but that’s how I feel. I mean, I let the coaches evaluate that. That’s just how I feel.” http://www.patriotledger.com/sports/x1477853617/Playing-time-may-increase-for-Celtics-Tony-Allen
Way to respect your elders. Posey was a key cog in Boston's rotation last year. I don't think they would've beat LA without him, to be honest.
Just for a bit of perspective, The Boston Globe is Boston's biggest and best newspaper. Its owned by the New York Times and is widely regarded as having one of the best teams of sports writers of any paper there is. Right behind the Globe in Boston, is the Boston Herald. Its a tabloid lay-out paper, but also has a very strong sports section. The Patriot Ledger is the paper of my beloved hometown of Quincy, MA. Quincy is the 8th largest city in Massachusetts. When you're only getting interviewed by Mike Fine of the Patriot Ledger...shut up.
I've barely ever watched Tony Allen play. I wasn't comparing the two, for all I know Allen could be 10X better than Posey. But, that doesn't mean he should go out to the media and say he's better. As I said, without Posey I don't think Boston would have won the championship last year. Plus, he's a 9 year veteran who has more than proved his worth, while the bulk of Allen's career has consisted of injuries and legal problems. I was just implying that he should show some respect.
I'm not all that familiar with Tony Allen. I would like to hear why? and which strengths Allen has over Posey, and which strengths Posey has over Allen. And why you would feel that Allen's strengths overweigh Posey's ones.
Allen is a better man/one-on-one defender, Posey was more of a smart defender within a team defense. Allen is more dynamic offensively. He can attack the basket, play off the dribble, play a mid range game, etc. Posey was a one trick pony, offensively. Camp out at the 3 point line and wait for an open shot. He was incapable of creating any offense for himself. Of course, Posey was a great competitor and Allen may lack in intangibles when compared to Posey, but I believe Allen is the more talented player of the two.
Do you think the Celtics are better off with a slasher/playmaker vs. a 3 point shooter? When you have Rondo and Pierce on the court they seem to play that role and I'm guessing he will have to sit at the 3 point line when they are creating.
He can shoot the 3 pretty well too, which will be his offensive role when he plays with the starters. As far as anchoring the second unit, something Posey could never do as a 6th man, he is a better offensive option. The Celtics went through some anemic offensive stretches last year when 2 of the big 3 was resting. Mostly because there was nobody on the bench who could consistently create offense. Allen is capable of carrying the 2nd unit, and he was proving it 2 years ago before getting hurt. He is finally fully recovered from that injury and I expect to see him show the same progress.
Oh ok, thanks for the thorough explanation on Allen. How many years does he have left with the Celts?
I'm a bit of an Allen fanboy (from 03-05 on BBB, my name was TA11en42) but if he can stay healthy, he is a player. He brings the most energy off the bench and has the big play ability that I didn't see from Posey. Now don't get it twisted, I loved the way Posey played the game and his heart, but I think Tony can be the catalyst on this year's team.
Well let's see: Defense -- check Three-point stroke -- fail Clutch -- fail Game awareness/intelligence -- fail Posey is a far superior player to Tony Allen.
He has different strengths than Posey, offensively. Of course Posey is better at being Jame Posey, but you're leaving out a lot of offensive skills in your very brief evaluation, like getting to the basket or the stripe, ability to create his own shot, etc.
Yes. Before he got injured, he was the number 2 option. I admit he does stupid things now and then, but he is talented offensively.
He was the 2nd option on a terrible team that was missing Paul Pierce. Tony Allen wasn't exactly wowing me during that period either. Yes I was impressed, but he played like that for, what, ten games? Don't misunderstand, I hope I'm wrong in this case. If he turns out to be a player, this team stands a very good chance of repeating as champions. I'm just pessimistic that he can do it.
