Yeah, that skit didn't make fun of ignorant white trash skinheads. Nope, not at all. The question asked was is racism funny. That skit was about racism and it is one of the funniest fucking things I have ever had the pleasure to witness. They should have made a movie about that skit. Uh, "racists" isn't a racial group. He didn't make fun of a racial group, he made fun of an ideological group...those who are racist. It was about racism. It wasn't racist, itself. The person you responded to directly said that racism always is hate-driven. Since Chappelle's skit was racist, it has no bearing on what that poster said.
Making fun of racist white people, that is an idealogy but making fun of poor black women with six welfare babies that is racism huh? Who would have thunk it? Exactly. And Dave's skit wasn't racism. A research paper on racism isn't, itself, racism. There is a difference between being racism and being about racism. At least, that seems like a pretty big difference to me.

I think racist jokes are hilarious. However, they're oftentimes used to make jokes about characteristics and race is just an overlay. Poles are no dumber than other races, just as Jews are no cheaper than others. However, jokes about dumb and cheap people are hysterical. And as Drew Carey used to say, "lighten up people." Sadly, Michael Jackson took his words literally.

As someone who is about as homogeneous a white person as possible (my mother was adopted, so that's half of my ethnicity right there that I don't know; my paternal grandfather was French Canadian) I don't really feel TOO much sympathy for people who are the butt of ethnic jokes. If someone wants to identify themselves as Polish, they kind of take the good and bad with that. If they want to strut as Italian, then they are probably setting themselves up for some jokes. This is to be distinguished, in my mind, from color-based jokes. Poking fun of people and stereotyping based on someone being an African American? A joke about Asians, generally, or white people? Potentially bad. The power imbalance has to be taken into account, as well. White people are safer and more acceptable as targets because of the historical and current difference in perception and reality of how this country works. With all of this said? Racist jokes CAN be funny. Humor is often based on keeping the recipient of the joke off-balance and forcing us to use laughter as a defense mechanism. Racist jokes can do both of these things, which can make them funny... even if they potentially are damaging. Ed O.
I'm chinese, I get all the jokes. I went to a private, christian school (I'm not christian, but the divorce would let us live with my dad again IF we went to private school, or my mother accepted it), I was on the JV team for my freshman year, and during a friggin prayer circle, one guy, who was a rude prick, looked at me, pushed, then shouted," John we can't have a chink in the chain", then laughed, while everyone else laughed. I was the only non-white person in that group, I didn't like being at that school and I eventually left after season ended. That kinda shit got on my nerves. But other stuff, is fine....just so long as it isn't blatant
I struggled with this thread. The first thing I wanted to do when I got up this morning was to send Minstrel an apology PM. I had been thinking to myself, "Geez, ABM, what are you trying to do? You receive a silly little Polish joke from a friend, then you go trot out some 'Is Racism Funny?' thread title. Way to go, bucko." When I went to bed last night, there were only a few posts - including Minstrel's. I was afraid I'd come back this morning to a closed thread and everyone mad at each other (you bbf'ers know what I'm talking about. ) I'm glad that wasn't the case here. *wipes brow* I suppose that somewhat speaks to the rationality and itegrity of the members. To be honest, I feel at least partially responsible for helping jump-start this Blazers board. Certainly, the last thing I want is to be a catlyst for racial debates and/or senseless sqaubbles. Anyway, I'm sorry and apologize if I've offended anyone. In the future, I'll try and keep things a bit more respectul and reasonable......................you know, such as ABM's Deal-o-The Day!! Oh btw, I'm not offended if I am one of the people that you are referring to. And to clarify, I didn't want my post to sound like I hate white people, it was just an example of my life where racism may have been funny for others, but not for myself. I think the thread itself was meant for little jokes and light hearted talk, but it is a topic that we can all talk about and we all know that we aren't attacking anyone else on here. We have real life for that but in all seriousness, it's just something to talk about. I don't think anything from here can be taken seriously...
