Remember after Sergio's rookie season where teams were reportedly offering quality players in return for Sergio? The general feelings on the message boards were that we wanted to wait and see if he could turn into an elite PG. Now, we would be happy to get a quality player in return, but his value has dropped to rock bottom.

Travis' value appears to have already peaked, and is on it's decline around the league. I read in the Batum vs Wallace thread, people saying we want to give Batum a chance.

Overvaluing your own players is something fans tend to do. I think we are close to the point where we really should consider taking the "sure thing" instead of rolling the dice on potential. If we get offered a solid starter for guys like Batum or Bayless, I think we should take it. Granted there are factors in each trade that make it good or bad, but in general, do you guys agree or disagree?

I think people do on here. I see all these threads and posts about how great Batum is and stuff, what if this is relaly as good as he gets. One good game out of every ten or something. I know what players like Outlaw are capable of, and sometimes its hard to say "lets trade Outlaw because of the POTENTIAL Batum has." It's risky, and why I'm not a GM lol.

I think, as a whole, everyone overvalues potential. It's a natural thing to do. If you have someone that's supposed to be good, you try to hold on to him to see if he pans out. A lot of people are willing to shell out a lot of cash based on potential alone too. Potential is also why you see players like Tyrus Thomas and Dark Milicic drafted so high - because people THINK they could be good and GMs are willing to take a chance on them, instead of a more proven commodity.

None of us our GM's so we should overvalue our potential. We have no say on the matter so it doesn't make a difference. The thing is most GM's overvalue potential also.

Yes, we do. Bayless can and should be traded, if there is value in it. We don't really need a Vinnie Johnson, but other teams do.

    Not Batum, though.

I'm missing the connection to why we should overvalue potential because we're not GM's. I agree with both statements, but I don't understand how they go together.
