by PER anyway Roy #2 SG behind Wade and up to #9 overall. http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/holl...stics?sort=per&qual=true&pos=all&seasonType=2
... and Rudy's 12th in the NBA among SG's. He's ahead of Michael Redd, Richard Hamilton, Leandro Barbosa, and a handful of other pretty effective shooting guards. I think Roy is helped in the PER category by the fact that he just doesn't take many bad shots and doesn't make a lot of mistakes. Rudy's helped by his simply eye-popping free throw percentage.
I really do think Roy is a top 10 player. At least borderline top 10. And he is def. the 3rd best SG in the NBA, imo.
After Kobe, it's a tie with him and Wade for #2 NBA shooting guard IMHO. He's definitely top 10 overall in my book. Only guys I'd rank clearly ahead are LeBron, Kobe, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul.
I have my doubts about whether he's really one of the elite (top 10 or so) players in the NBA, but the way he's been playing lately, and in particular scoring? He's doing it all and he deserves all the accolades people want to send his way... Ed O.
I'd add Dwyane Wade and Amare Stoudemire to that list, but so far this season, Roy has been truly remarkable. If he can really play at this level (top-10 player) long-term and if Oden fulfills his promise...this team could actually be both "two deep" and "too deep" at the same time...the two front-line superstars and a very talented supporting cast. Perchance to dream!
Having Rudy as the #12 SG is no less surprising. A third of the way into his rookie season. Wow. Wow. Wow. Notice that among healthy SGs, Rudy has played fewer minutes than just about anyone until you get down to JR Smith at 24. In other words, the ratings clearly show that Rudy would be a starting SG on 2/3rds of the teams in the league. iWatas
Thats cool that you would put him up there with Wade. Me personally, I have Kobe and Wade on a tier 1 level and BRoy on that tier 2 level. BUt i have Roy ahead of ppl like J. Johnson, Iverson, McGrady and Ginobili. Wade is having an unbelievable season.
The only players I have above Roy are LeBron,Kobe, and Wade. Amare- He's too much of a chemistry headcase, me first attitude, and only likes to score Dwight-PHENOMINAL young center, but can he be counted on in the clutch? His poor ft% keeps him below Roy imo. CP3-Its arguable with Roy, and he does have the playoff experience, but he always does sub par against us, so it's hard to put him above our guy. Imo, CP needs to work on his jumper more to become an uberstar, already a superstar. Deron-Again, very arguable with Roy. It is really just a preference. I give Roy the nod, because he can play the 1 and 2, Deron not really a good 2 man. He is intense on defense though, very impressive. KG-Just getting too old in age. He wouldn't have the impact he is now unless the team was surrounded with the talent it has now. Duncan-Still getting it done, even with his age increasing. Roy i the SG version of Duncan. Joe Johnson-established himself in the top 10 this year, Roy with the edge, because of last year in the RG, who can forget?
I can't wait to see what happens after I say this in a Blazers bored, but ... ... .... .... Mayo > Roy
Well, you have to keep it plausible to generate annoyance. Does "Shavlik Randolph > Rudy Gayl" drive you crazy?
No, he is not - http://www.basketball-reference.com...&sum=0&p1=roybr01&y1=2009&p2=mayooj01&y2=2009 But ... and this is a good thing - Mayo so far is having a fantastic rookie season and it is remarkable how close he is individually to Roy the rookie - http://www.basketball-reference.com...&sum=0&p1=roybr01&y1=2007&p2=mayooj01&y2=2009 The interesting part, how ever, is to always compare their winshare - and Roy beats OJ now as he did as a rookie. Still - you have to love what OJ does in the NBA - he is much more effective as a professional player than he was a college player - and he is still pretty young. Trading K-Love for OJ-Mayo was a world class steal, about as big as trading R-Foye for Roy.
I like Mayo, but he's he's not even the best rookie right now with Rose playing a more complete game.
I wasn't serious when I posted that. Mayo isn't at Roy's level YET. He could get there in the near future, but as of now Roy is the better player.
could argue several of those, but notably chris paul is off to the best career start of all time for a PG. it's a stretch to put roy on an equal level, much less above.
Interesting that you put so much faith in PER, and base so many player comparisons on PER... except when it doesn't agree with your opinion.
Roy has not established himself as a top 10 player. Repeat All-Star? Yes. Portland's best player - again? Yes. A top young guard? Yes. Throwing up top 10 productions numbers so far this season? Yes. But numbers done for a relatively short period of time does not cement a spot in the top 10. I think you have to have good numbers for a season leading a team into the playoffs and make some noise there OR you have to have amazing numbers for a couple of seasons before you can say a player is a "Top" player. You just can't go by a small number of games and crown someone. Lots of players have had really great stretches of seasons. I remember one year Peja stormed out of the gate to start a season scoring over 25pts per game and leading Sacramento to more wins than expected. Some said he was in the discussion for MVP and was a top 10 player, etc. He fell off from that pace and we never heard that talk again. Peja wasn't then, before or after a "Top 10 Player". This despite having top 3 PER in the NBA for a period of time. If you are making a prediction, fine. If you think he has arrived and will keep up this level of play, great. But no awards get handed out yet. Not until he does this for a while more yet.
