Useless question, but... Everytime they show Roy on the bench, he's always sitting next to, and talking with Shavlik. What's up with that?
Shavlik Randolph is the guy Roy relies on to tell him if he's being too selfish. As we learned from the Phoenix game.
He knows Shavlick won't be getting any coaching during the game? No sweat so he smells better than the other guys? They both have an appreciation for trivia? He doesn't want to seem racist? Since Roy is hurt he tries to find someone else as slow as he is now?
S-Bo is to Roy what Whitsitt thought Schrempf would be for Sabas. Or else Shavlik has had a plan ever since arriving to suck up to the team's superstar in order to stay on the team. Kidding..
Another classic example of a star bonding with an end of the bench guy was Michael Jordan and his friendship with Rod Higgins. I'm not sure what sparks these friendships, but they seem to benefit both parties in some way and often go on long after trades, retirement, etc. BNM
In Jordan's case, I wouldn't be surprised if he had an easier time becoming closer with people he didn't feel at all competitive with. As I recall, Jordan's relationships with other stars were often stormy but his closer friends in the game were generally non-stars. Charles Barkley may have been the exception, but I recall occasional acrimony even between them.
Agreed. Other stars are seen as competitors and rivals - especially to someone as competitive as Jordan. Having a teammate that isn't a rival vying for your playing time, probably makes them a better candidate for friendship. Also, by all accounts, Rod Higgins is an intelligent guy, well spoken and knowledgeable about basketball, both on the court and the business. Maybe Shavlik, having spent three years at Duke, offers Brandon an intelligent sounding board to discuss game issues and situations with. BNM
Shavlik is a homophobe. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...AR2007020802247.html?nav=rss_email/components I did not know that. How dare Roy sit next to such a buffoon!
Perhaps Shavlik was telling Roy about his night at the Ibiza nightclub on SW 2nd and Taylor. Bayless, Outlaw and Shavlik have already been there in the last two weeks already.
And I thought it was something simple like Shavlik is friendly and outgoing and probably liked by most of the Blazers and thats why his contract was picked up the rest of the year.
