Not exactly the way you want to make a playoff push.

Yeah, we're 5-4 in those games, but it's playing with fire.

I concur. Portlands slow starts are starting to kill them. This is where another scorer on the starting unit, like a Martell would really help. Lets put it this way. I don't think a lot of folks bother to cover Batum, because he isn't a threat. That means teams are free to double team.

agreed, Batum needs to start hitting on Offense, like he did that one game.... plus we need to space better for GO and LMA to pass out of.

Yeah.. the slow starts are a bummer to climb out of every night. And I agree Nicolas needs to bring something offensively, and look for his shot like he did against LA. We actually got out to a great start that game.

What's weird is it's just as much our defense as our offense. Teams just start going off on us, and then we eventually tighten up. We are hardly ready for games in the first quarter, it seems. Offensively or defensively.

I think it's huge that we have the ability to make the adjustments and take back games. Last year or years past we would have just keeled over but you can tell this year the guys are learning how they're being played and adjust (we won't speak of last night).

Our offense is not very good. I don't care at all about EFF either. It is so easy to defend the Blazers it's not even funny.

Defense has been a problem all season in the first half. I don't know how many times, but we've allowed a lot of teams to shoot 50 plus percent from the field in the first half. Teams shoot 46.4 percent against us overall and it's sort of amazing that we're in the playoff hunt with that kind of number when you look at the list for opposing team field goal pct. All the great teams in this league are at the top, and we're ninth worst.

Does anyone know of a site where they have field goal percentage by quarter, both for and against? I have a sneaking suspision that Portland is near the bottom of the league in first quarter field goal percentage allowed, if not the very bottom. If that doesn't change, they are going to get the living crap beat out of them by the better teams in the league.

Not field-goal percentage, but we tend to get better as the game goes along according to 82games.com

We're the third-best fourth-quarter team in terms of beating teams in the quarter.

Well Brandon was out for 4 of those and he still wasn't 100% for the last two. With Blake sidelined there's a good chance this trend will continue.

It seems like it was the same story last year. We like to live dangerously. We can't put teams away. We have a ton of talent, so we're capable of going on a tear, but we give up leads too easily. It's something that will hopefully change as the team gains experience.
