Unless he turns Chinese, or marries the queen of China (is there such a thing?), he won't get voted on. Screw who gets voted on the team. That is a lame ass popularity contest. It's a bigger honor to be chosen by the coaches.
Roy should just be happy he's making it at all. With upstarts like Mayo, Durant, Gay etc. it may be harder for him to make it in future years. I have a feeling Mayo will steal Roy's spot a time or two.

In Clyde's case, however, he had several things going in his favor to overcome the small market factor: - The Blazers had made deep runs into the playoffs the previous two seasons, so he was on the common fan's mind as an elite player. - Clyde in 1992 was having a brilliant season, and was being included in serious NBA MVP talk, behind Michael Jordan, of course. For Brandon Roy to crack the starting 5 for the All-Star team, being in Portland, a similar series of circumstances have to occur. He has to start dropping 30+ consistantly, or the Blazers need to start making it to the 2nd round of the playoffs or deeper consistantly. Just being a good player isn't enough as a Blazer.
Unless he's voted on by the fans, the Grizzlies would have to make a considerable turnaround for Mayo to be considered.... either that or he would have to average 30 a game.
If Portland reaches their full potential, and makes multiple deep playoff runs, Roy will stay in the All Star game.
True. I think Kobe will be there for a while still. It will be tight over the next couple of years. Durant is already all-star worthy and Mayo will likely be a 25/5/5 guy in the near future.
Not hardly. The kid's been putting up numbers for a month on a terrible team. When OKC makes the playoffs and he's still producing at that level, then talk about him.
Agreed. A lot of very very good players simply never get into the fans' consciousness the way some players do. Until and unless Roy demonstrates post-season domination on a few occasions, I doubt he makes it there, either. Ed O.
I would hope to see the fans recognize what Roy brings to the game, but he's just too fundamental for that to ever happen. He's the antithesis of what garners you a fan vote. He lays the ball in instead of dunking it. He doesn't showboat. He gets his teammates involved rather than looking to get his stats. Those things, however, make him a coach's favorite. So I expect him to make it every year he plays like this one. Furthermore, there's a funny thing that happens when you've made it a couple of times--you're expected to make it unless your game really drops off. That's why you see guys like Dirk, Shaq, Amare, Kidd, etc. make it even when they have years not quite as good as one-hit wonders. I expect Brandon to become one of those "placeholder" players.
Duncan makes it every year and he's not that flashy but of course he backs it up with a million championships, and I think that's what Brandon would have to have to get a starting nod.
Durant is having a phenomenal season. His team is getting better as well. He's averaging, for the season, 24.8pts / 6.6rbs / 2.7ast / 47.2 FG% / 85.7 FT% And his numbers are going UP from there. I was pondering the idea of starting a Durant thread, but didn't really want to give Mixum or other negative nancy's any fodder for their cause.
