I have a couple of solutions. Since they would make neither side happy, they're probably fair. Since they would make neither side happy, they would never work. Solution One: Create a State of Palestine consisiting of the West Bank (pre-1967) and the Gaza Strip. Create a secure link between the two territories that doesn't cut Israel in two (a raised roadway or a tunnel). Israelis may stay in the West Bank, but they will become citizens of Palestine. Those that return to Israel will be compensated by the UN for their loss as long as they leave their homes in good condition. Those settlements will be a gift to the people of Palestine. Solution Two: Pretty much the same deal except that Palestine is absorbed into two countries. The West Bank is returned to Jordan, creating a New Trans-Jordan. The Gaza Strip is given to Egypt. Inherent in both these solutions are the sticking points. First, there will be no right of return. Second, Jerusalem will not be the capital of either state. Third, Jerusalem will become a UN protectorate, with a UN security force guaranteeing its security. You can be a citizen of Israel or of Palestine/New Trans-Jordan and live in Jerusalem, but it will be controlled by neither country. As a focal point of three religions, it should be made into a World Heritage Site. Fourth, a peace treaty is signed between Israel and every country that is still at war with them. Furthermore, that document recognizes Israel's right to exist. Israel is a reality. The Palestinians are being used by the Arabs and the Persians to unify their people at home against the West. There also has to be a recognition on Israel's part that their absorption of the former Palestine has uprooted many people and they have a responsibility to help guarantee a prosperous and free Palestine within its new borders.
Didn't Tom Clancy write a bunch about the "Jerusalem as a tri-religious-seat World Heritage Site" in Sum of All Fears?
He did, but the idea had been around for a while before he wrote about it. The basic thought is that since there is no agreement on how Jerusalem should be managed by the Israelis or the Palestinians and it's considered a holy site for Christians, Jews and Muslims, that it should be seen in a broader context.
Since we're apparently the police of the world, I guess we need to go over there, take over the area, and setup visitation rights, Israelis get it on weekends, Palestinians on the weekdays!
I don't have an alternative, why do I need to make one? Let them figure their own shit out. The UN is a joke....
Ignoring the problem was a large cause of September 11th. You can't stick your head in the sand and wish the problem away. Security has a price.
Well, I don't 100% agree that Sept. 11th was all done by terrorists, but that's a different discussion.
There's just way to many questions that haven't been answered, things that have been dug up, evidence that was sent away, insurance money to be had etc, that I just don't think it was ALL terrorists.. Call me crazy, but I question it. As people should.
I have an alternative. It's called quit letting this bullshit called religion tear our world apart. Maybe if people weren't taught to believe that hocus pocus in the first place, and teaching human respect and human rights instead, a lot less of this bullcrap would be happening. Whats wrong with being good for the sake of being a good person?
Some religions teach that people aren't good by nature. Some philosophers, also. If you think that everyone pops from the womb as a "good person" with the innate capability to "be good", that's your own particular brand of philosophy/religion. Unfortunately, it's been borne out over human history that greed and selfishness generally overwhelms a "moral compass" or "conscience". That's not to say everyone who professes any religion is "good", or that all religions should be followed. What I'm saying is that without that "hocus pocus", you'd have a general form of anarchy, imo.
If you want to see what is really happening in Palestine and what the Israeli army does for "security" then you should check it out. Its atrocious.
Taking a shit and smearing it all over a childrens school is not my idea of "security". Not letting a woman in labor pass a checkpoint to the hospital and then the baby dying because of that isnt my idea of "security". Propaganda is a word people use to ignore the facts all too often.
lol best. But srsly folks, there's a reason this is called an intractable conflict. The way we need to solve it is through some form of time travel. Luckily, I know of this island... sorry, been watching too much LOST.
