Good catch Mike. Looks like some players got their way by going to the press. If ever you were looking for an answer to the question of whether the players respect VDN . . .
I dunno it I can say it was the players going to the press, or KC just overreaching and then stepping back. I also don't know what it says about the players and VDN. I mean, I might respect my boss, but that doesn't mean a work mandated Super Bowl party is a good idea. On the other hand, getting some camaraderie on the team isn't a bad idea. Even if people didn't bitch, would it be good if they just gritted their teeth through the Super Bowl party? Or maybe, they go to the party and end up having a good time. Hell if I know... these kinds of things are hard to figure.
What will happen is Rose, Gordon, and Ruffin will show up. Then Vinny will exclaim, "This is three times the turnout we had last year", at which point Gordon will say, "No, when you multiple a number by 0, it's still 0" at which point Vinny will levy a fine against Gordon...but will wait until the Bulls are back in Chicago, and leave it in his locker.
I'm not quite sure Vinny realizes he's coaching a NBA team (which would explain a lot). Having a Super Bowl Party for his players sounds like something you'd do if they were in high school. I can't wait to hear who actually shows up.
Dunno the circumstances about the party. It could be a very public event with press there and some sort of charity involved.
It'd be one thing if they were in Chicago, but they're on a road trip. It seems like a good idea by Vinny. Maybe not the mandatory part, but it's also a shame that our players didn't jump at the opportunity of attending.
The entire Lakers team has blown off Phil Jackson countless times when he tried to organize similar events.
Heh, I dunno, as AeHr ropAoH mentions, plenty of pro coaches have tried similar stuff, with varying amounts of success. This will be one time I'll give Vinnie the benefit of doubt. He was smart enough to not make it mandatory. In the grand scheme of things, these look great if you come together and start winning. If you don't, it's just more evidence you're a boob. I doubt it's determinative in either case.
Yeah, i just read that everyone showed up. It surprised me that they all went. I know Larry wasn't on the bench last night during the Rockets game, but does anyone know he was even on the trip at all?
I wonder if they feel bad for VDN and they came out of pity. I understand the want of having a team that all get along and do other activities other than basketball but its like spending an evening with your boss.
