The downfall started when Jamison got hurt, then Butler, then Arenas, ruining the second half of the 2006-07 season. Butler missed 24 more games due to various injuries last season, but the big blow came when Arenas went down with a knee injury that has required three surgeries in 18 months. He and Haywood (torn wrist ligament) have yet to play this season and are nowhere close to returning.

Actually, it’s the $161 million question.

Wizards president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld was so sure of the plan that he bet the future of the franchise on it when he signed Arenas to a six-year, $111 million contract and Jamison to a four-year, $50 million deal during the offseason. Grunfeld has attempted to downplay Arenas’ absence by citing the six-year commitment, yet this lost season means that 17 percent of that commitment has already gone to waste

The wiz looked like a promising team headed in the right direction with the right group of players . . . but now they seem very far away from where they were. Jamison did say he would rather have a healthy Arenas then a major trade.

Again you are talking about a very limited number of teams that would do it. And Washington only has about two weeks to find one. Bottom line to me is that the proposal is legitimate.

Arenas and Roy in the backcourt would be an interesting pairup. Let's say, hypothetically, that Arenas is able to come back.

    Arenas/Blake/Sergio
    Roy/Rudy
    Butler/Batum/Webster
    Aldridge/Frye
    Oden/Przybilla

That's pretty impressive. We would be one hell of an offensive team, assuming Butler and Arenas were able to buy into the team concept. Arenas JUST turned 27. That's not exactly old. He fits our window, assuming he's healthy.

Of course, this entire theory rests on one major point..... that Jason Quick, Brian Wheeler, Mike Rice, and Mike Barrett have any inside information. :dunno:

I think Lebron James would look great in a Wiz uni. I hope the wiz are figuring something out so they can offer the max to James when the time comes. :D

If only the Portland offer is on the table, they would decline, and wait to dump him later. (Assuming they want to dump him) That's my opinion. You don't give two stars away for nothing. Ever.

Butler is a star, but you're assuming that Arenas is still a star. We don't know, given his history of injuries, whether he'll be able to come back and play at that same level. So the Wizards are sitting on a guy who is being paid 111 million (give or take), with no indication whether he'll ever be able to play again period.

Because Abe Pollin is their owner.

Mr. Pollin is an extremely nice man, but is the cheapest guy this side of Donald Sterling.

No we don't, but you're assuming the very worst. The Wizards know Arenas the best, and if they have any indications that he won't be a useful player anymore, then they'll want to dump him. At this point, we don't know that, so I'm going to assume that he's going to come back as the same player he was before.

Even if they trade Arenas before the deadline, they are still going to have to pay his salary more or less for this season because they also have to take back a chunk of salary. So it's much more beneficial if they just wait till the off-season to make a decision.

My money is still on the Bulls if we trade with anyone.

Why did this "cheap" owner sign Arenas to his gargantuan contract?

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Arenas is a non-starter, IMO. But suppose Portland took back some contracts Washington might appreciate dumping. They don't have any huge contracts, really, beyond their big three, but Deshawn Stevenson and Darius Songaila have multi-year deals that combined would clear $8-9 million per year, for largely unproductive players.

Perhaps something along the lines of this:

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/featur...8~851&teams=27~27~27~27~22~22~22~22&te=&cash=

It gives them a good player in Outlaw, a decent young player with upside in Webster and saves them a lot of money.

Pipe dream, perhaps, to get Butler without giving up a core player, but it depends on how much Washington wants some monetary relief after committing so much to Arenas and Jamison.

I don't care what anybody says there is no owner in the NBA that would take a chance on Arenas with that contract unless they see him play and he was healthy.

And you are the only person making assumptions in this thread about Arenas' ability to play. Dude, I think you're a good poster, but you make a point of trashing every trade proposal B-Roy. :sigh:

We already have our 'big three' and arguably the best crop of young talent in the league. No way we need to make a move like this and cripple ourselves for five years. I hate this time of year.

Yeah, let's turn Raefs expiring contract into Gilbert f'ing Arenas... Brilliant!

    :drumroll:

Maybe his knees would force him to retire? (running away quickly)
