I think Portland is the kind of place that takes some adjustment. I live part of the year in a town where it's sunny 315 days a year, and it drives me nuts. I love fog and mist in the morning and a nice overcast day. I had a couple of friends who were transferred to Portland and absolutely hated it. The darkness and gloom in the winter really got to them. For me, it makes me as happy as a pig in slop. Drizzle doesn't change what I do outside. Here in Denver, if it's even overcast, people are less likely to go outside. One more thing: considering that the amount of green space in a city was a factor in the rankings, it shows how far off the chart Portland is in the other areas. We have more green space per square mile than any other US city I believe.
I thought it was just my brother who was like that... I personally don't see how anyone prefers overcast to sunlight, but that's just me.
I prefer overcast to sunlight also. Especially with wind. I love the feel of wind. I guess I prefer the seasons of fall and winter to spring and summer.
>10% unemployment and increasing on a daily basis, a mayor who dates 17 year-olds and ignores his own supporters who have turned on him, hordes of ever-increasing homeless people in the downtown area, and a governor who appears on the front page of the local paper begging for handouts from the federal government. What's not to be happy about?
The Democrats plan on taxing our microbrewries a 1900% increase. So once that happens, we'll have the "privilege" of our local brewries either going out of business or selling to a giant like AB or Miller. So, I guess we have the Trail Blazers left...until the upcoming lockout.
This survey is obviously flawed. Everyone knows the unhappiest city in America has to be the city that MIXUM lives in. Which I believe is somewhere in NY/NJ. -Pop
I think it's a suburb of Hartford. And if you've ever been to the insurance capital of the US, it's not far from the truth.
Portland is full of liberals who have a very pessimistic view of life. They believe that everyone has been victimized, oppressed, or exploited in some way by the ruling elite, and that there is no God, no justice, and no ultimate redemption. No wonder they're depressed.
Also we kick puppies and eat nothing but rice crackers because we loathe anything that falls above "bland" in the taste-meter. Additionally we caused the Holocaust, shot JFK and were solely responsible for Seinfeld going off the air. And AIDS? Yep, that was us. -Pop
If you keep this up you're going to be inducted into the Generalizing About Large Groups of People Using Only Anecdotal Evidence Hall of Fame (GALGPUOAE HOF).
