Seriously? Not to take this thread too far off topic, but I've never heard that "oriental" had a negative connotation to it.
Captain Caveman. Whenever he scores, the PA system should blast a "Captain CaaAAaaAAAaaveman!" It works.
I've hated "the natural" as a nickname since the moment I heard it. Then I gave it a chance. I still kinda hate it, but maybe not as much. Anytime I hear wheeler call him that I cringe though. Roy's game is all about pace and basketball fundamentals, not natural organic talent. If anything Roy's game is manufactured, Roy is about the basics. He's also super clutch, though he's going to need to continue to provide that in the playoffs. The sandman is kinda fitting. Doesn't someone already have that one though? I also like, The fundamental: too long, i know. and finally, The element: cause he takes people out of their element and puts them in his. There's also the connection that the elements are the basic building blocks of existence. Roy's game is all about the basics of basketball.
Perhaps something could be made from the fact that roy/roi means "king" in French...and that's where the word "royalty" comes from. But off-hand, I don't know what to do with that. "King" is already in use, more naturally, by LeBron James. "Prince" doesn't really sound good. "Royalty" doesn't have any natural application..."Royalty for three" doesn't work.
See what a tough fit a nickname is for him? Like I said before, sometimes nicknames just have to come naturally. If they don't then he's just "Brandon" or "Roy". Personally, I always think of him as the Stepford player. It's like he's programmed to say all the right things and make all the right decisions.
What's wrong with either of mine? I think his mama likes "Brandon" and I hope his father likes "Roy".
Guys with cool nicknames: Vinsanity, The Truth, The Answer, Franchise, Starbury, The Big (whatever), King James Guys without cool nicknames: Ray Allen, Duncan, McGrady, Parker, Paul, Deron Williams, Nash The second group of guys have nicknames, but they don't roll of the tongue. They seem a little clunky, or just boring. (The Big Fundamental? T-Mac?) That second group tends to be a little bit less about the show. A little less likely to throw down the nasty dunk, because they know a layup is also worth two points. Which group does Roy belong in? The answer is pretty obvious. And while it's fun to pin nicknames on him, it's why I doubt any will ever really stick.
I give you an A for creativity, but your ideas are just a little too 'out there', like you're trying too hard. Maybe tone it down a bit. Don't get all crazy on us.
The four guys on our team most likely to get nicknames that really stick are Oden, Fernandez, Bayless and Outlaw. In that order. Outlaw may never get a nickname, though, because his last name is so badass. How do you come up with a nickname that's going to sound more awesome than "Outlaw"?
I think "Trout" is actually a fairly cool nickname. Nice how a blending of both names turn into a word. But not one that really says a lot about his game. So, not perfect.
"The Saint" Vice-Roy gg The Little Fundamental gg would be all hip and "internetty", but I like "The Natural"
