He'd only have to deal with players for up to 4 years. Constant rebuilding, just like the Bulls. He's an alum with experience managing big budgets, too. Not sure he wants less stress, rather Gar seems to be an actual better guy for the job of evaluating talent, picking coaches, and making trades. This is the key part of the article, IMO: Chicago fans had been particularly critical of Paxson, who played on three Bulls championship winners, as the team stumbled into the lottery last year and struggled for much of this season despite the arrival of rookie of the year Derrick Rose(notes). They even booed him during a ceremony honoring longtime analyst Johnny “Red” Kerr, who died shortly afterward, and around that time, came reports that Paxson would be out either immediately or at the end of the season.
That was he was doing before he quit his GM job and beat a cowardly retreat. The John Paxson GM era. More losses than wins. Nothing of note accomplished. A mediocre GM. At best.
While I'm glad to see him move on/up, more playoff appearances than not. But it's time to let Gar do his thing and see if we can't be a real contender.
2 first round exits and one playoff series victory over a crippled team. 0 division championships 0 conference championships 0 nba championships Nothing of note.
Did you support the removal of Jerry Krause? Believe me when I say that this is a completely un-snarky question. I'm just curious for a little context on your observations, and don't remember how you came out on that one. I'm not opposed to your take that we should expect more -- we have the most profitable team in the league.
Yah, it was pretty clear that he had lost his effectiveness. But he accomplished several things of note over his career. I had no opinion on Paxson as GM when he took over the job. Turns out he was pretty bad.
Forman recieves a promotion http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=295102&src=150 If you believe the Herald, he was nothing more than the mouthpiece for a three-headed GM team.
3 first round exits and 4 total playoff appearances in 6 years. Compared to 0 playoff appearances the previous 5. But I do have real hope for the team under Forman. He seems to have made some killer trades (Miller+Salmons from Sacto, Hughes to NY) and brought in a coach who lets the players do their thing. Not so much "right way" anymore, the team is more fun to watch. The summer is a huge one for us, though. If we can add a big man and Deng comes back healthy, we're certainly better than last season. Let Gordon walk and Deng doesn't come back and we'll be watching someone like Linton Johnson III play 30+ minutes a game.
Who wouldn't look good compared to post dynasty Krause? IT? Let's please set our bar a touch higher. What is a reasonable goal to get to a conference finals. Or even back to the 2nd round of the playoffs. It's fine with me if this is truly no change to the status quo. It will be easier to throw the bums out if there isn't some nice progress.
John Paxson probably deserves a B- or so from GM. Not a great GM. Pretty good eye for talent in the draft. Restricted by a cheap owner. (We couldn't trade for Gasol because JR wouldn't go into the luxury tax, so the Lakers got him instead). That would have been interesting. You could have potentially had something to build around Hinrich/Gordon/Deng/Gasol. Probably would have rebounded and made the playoffs last year. Granted were in a better position now because of Rose. Now if we can trade for a big man with Rose/Gordon, we have a scarily good team. But you can't depend on winning the lottery, especially with the 9th best odds, so at the time, being kept from trading for Gasol was a bad thing for the org, just turned out good by dumb luck.
Paxson is still going to be around, and have final say, so this is not that big a deal to me. Paxson is a hell of a GM, he complied some really talented kids. Although, one can say always drafting near the top helped things, along with the miracle of the bouncing ping pong balls I like the guy. Of course if he had a redo he probably would not have gone with Tyrus back in the day, but hey then we might not have gotten Rose so everything worked itself out.
