He has us likely trading the pick because we'd probably rather have the cap space, but if not ... Could you guys live with this?
if for example we get a vet starter like Kidd.. then yes I could live with it.. Lawson would be in Bayless' spot last year as 3rd string guy.
I have lived with the Blazers having no good point guards on the team since Greg Anthony was here, so why wouldn't I be able to live with this decision? At least it gives a chance of some new blood coming through as compared to just reliving the same nigthmare over and over again like in groundhogs day.
His combine performance reportedly didn't go all that well. Lots of North-South speed, but some questions about his lateral quickness and apparently he didn't show up in the best of shape, further adding to his reputation that he might not have the best practice habits.
Meh. He wouldn't play in the near term and he doesn't project to be anything particularly good in the longer term. I'd rather add a higher-risk, higher-reward guy. Ed O.

Well at a certain point, you get sick of seeing the same pattern over and over again. You know how many years in a row now it has "Well, maybe we will have a good PG next year." I am sick of that shit. It's like watching some dipshit repeat the same mistakes over and over again. At some point you get sick of it, and start railing your case. I am sick of it. I am sick of every year being a year of Portland being completely decimated by fast scoring PG with no answer from the Portland side of the court. I am sick of the Blazer PG being decimated by physical PG in the paint. I am sick of Portland's PG being a "good backup" in a best case scenario.
Well clearly this team needs to draft another rookie and see if the mud sticks to the wall this time.
hasoos you make a good point about the fact that we haven't really had a good PG since Greg Anthony (and prior to that we had several -- great point guards during the NBA finals teams, Kenny Anderson, Rod Strickland, etc. Maybe this isn't really on point, but I kind of like Kopponen and Bayless's potential. I am hoping one or both of them is given an opportunity this year. I like what I saw in Summer League from both guys last year, although that isn't necessarily comparable to what they would produce in the regular season. Aside from Roy and to a certain extent Rudy and Oden, Nate doesn't seem that willing to give Rookies much PT. My point, I guess, is that a rookie PG doesn't seem to be a big need for this team. I like Rubio's potential and depending on what direction KP goes, I am not opposed to trading up to get him, assuming there is some roster changes to make room for him to entice him to come to the NBA, or maybe even drafting him and bringing him over a year later when Blake and Sergio are gone. This draft seems very weak at PG. Curry was a nice college player, but is he just the 2nd coming of Salim Stoudemire? Ty Lawson is another good college player, but I can't say that he is a better prospect than Bayless. Bottom line, unless there is a real star in this draft at PG, I don't see the point in drafting another young ballhandler unless our other young PGs (Bayless, Koponen) are on their way out via trade. Too many cooks running the kitchen and you burn the cake or... something like that.
I loved Greg Anthony on our squad! I remember him and the Jazz owner Miller getting into a shouting match during a game!
Bayless did get an opportunity and blew it. Koppenen may come over for summer league, but he most likely would be the 3rd PG if he even makes the team. Neither of them is going to be as good as Greg Anthony next year. They may not be as good as Greg Anthony ever.
I wouldn't want him. If we are going to get a PG I want a somewhat proven PG like Sessions who we at least know is goign to be fine in the NBA and potentially a star. If not i'd take a vet like Miller. But I'd rather have Bayless than almost anyone in the draft outside of Rubio, and a Miller/Bayless PG combo would be bomb. What? How? He has done pretty good so far for the hand that has been dealt. He was put in the summer league and won MVP. He came to Portland and in the games he played over 20minutes he was getting liek 11 and 3 which definitely isn't blowing it. He didn't have the greatest season, but as he gets more time we will start to uncover who the real Bayless is. In my opinion we haven't even scrathed the surface.
As much as I loved what Greg Anthony brought to the team off the bench, let's not go too overboard here. We're basically talking about a guy who averaged 6 PPG and 2 APG for his 3-year Blazer career. On a per-36 minute basis that comes out to about 12 pts and 4 ast. Not exactly the stuff of legend. Yes, he did play some impressive defense for stretches - especially during the strike-shortened season, but he was basically a borderline starter/very good back-up (sound familiar). Nothing more, nothing less. BNM
I'd rather have Rodrigue Beaubois. Lawson could be good, but he strikes me as a poor man's Jameer Nelson, and I think Nelson looks a lot better on the Magic than he would anywhere else (and wasn't missed much). If we're drafting another backup PG, I want one that can defend (I too have happy memories of Greg Anthony's game-changing D) and Beubois has Batum-type arms, crazy speed and this year's second-best vertical.
I agree, Beaubois would be more intriguing than Lawson. A poster here compared him to Barbosa offensively, in terms of upside, a comparison that seems correct to me. Plus I agree that he has the tools to be a really tough defender.
