http://www.thestar.com/sports/article/643930 i hate to sound blasphemous but i hated alvin as a player- he jacked up way too many ill advised shots. i remember as a teenager always routing for chris childs and even milt over alvin. although, embracing the past and giving the players an example of how to conduct yourself as a professional makes for a good hire.
A-Dub had so many problems with injury, but when he was healthy he was a workhorse and an integral part of our franchise. He's always going to have the respect of the fans for that, though I feel like this is more of a good publicity move by Triano than a staffing decision.
the raptors need an alvin williams type of player.. not scared to dive for loose balls and sacrifice himself on the court..
Same here. I loved the dude's commitment to D and his clutchness. Everyone knew he wasn't the greatest playmaker, but he played above his head for most of his career. The way he ruined his career because he wanted to keep playing while injured was both inspiring and frustrating in its stupidity. I'm sure part of this is to generate some good-will among the fanbase, but Alvin has spent some time teaching players at Villanova since he retired. I'd love to see what he could do with Roko, and hopefully he can teach Jose a more effective defensive approach than simply clapping his hands in front of his opponent.
the dude was committed to D but he couldnt keep anybody in front of him, even prior to his injures. after his injuries- he would have made jose look like an all world defender. and clutchness in my opinion was a consequence of him breaking plays at the end of the game and taking bad shots, a handful of which actually went in. i think the myth of alvin was perpetrated by swirsky and armstrong but debunked by knowledgeable raptor fans as well as butch carter who didnt think much of his game and sat his arse.
You're probably right. I was a much younger and stupider basketball fan back then. I know after our '01 playoff run, I started longing for a healthy playmaking PG.
Yes. I fuckin' love Alvin Williams. The dude is a straight G and I'm hoping he'll lay a smack down on Jose to make him a tougher defensive player.
i didnt realize how articulate alvin is: http://www.fan590.com/media.jsp?content=20090715_174929_6316
