I wouldn't call it a no-brainer, but it should be explored as a possibility. Some people can coach and some can't. Majic Johnson couln't coach to save his life and yet one would think he'd be a great PG coach. Just because Kevin was a very good player doesn't speak to how well he can coach Oden.
Yes, this is what I've hoped for for a while. McHale and Olajuwon had the best footwork in the post ever. McHale's was more conventional, though. I think he would be an amazing help to Oden, especially since his post-playing success has been in coaching (rather than in general managing).
It says that he won't be the coach, but it doesn't say he won't be part of the organization, does it?
Yes, but McHale has already shown that he CAN coach. He's a terrible GM, but the Wolves performed significantly better with him on the bench then with Randy Wittman.
Does it seem kind of shady from the Minny side? Asked the guy to fire the coach and to coach the team himself and give up his managerial duties, then hired a new GM that relieved him of his coaching duties? I dunno, it all seems like a passive aggressive way to fire someone.
Wow... took more than a decade to figure that one out for them. Good for them, but they're still 3-4 years away from being relevant again if they make the right moves.
Magic wasn't actually that bad a coach - he just had no patience whatsoever. When he took over, he drove them REALLY hard, they went on a winning streak, then everybody burnt out and they went on a losing streak, and he quit at the end of the season. Re: McHale. You're right that being good at something doesn't automatically make you a good teacher of it. BUT - who's the young player with the best low-post game in the league? I'd say Yao Ming has the best post game and post footwork. Of course, Olajuwon has worked with him in the past, but I'm not sure how much.
You don't teach talent, you teach technique. McHale has had a lot to do with Al's improvement curve being that steep.
Well, he was also fired over his coaching ability and it also doesn't speak at all as to how he can coach big men. Don't misunderstand me, we should look into having him on staff. All I'm saying is that the fact he was a good player does not automatically qualify him as a great coach for centers.
Sorry, shouldn't have used talent then. Al Jefferson had relaly good technique in Boston as well. I am sure some of it is getting refined. But he was a very goodpost player iN boston, and isn't worlds better now in Minnesota. The primary difference is being the focus of the offense, so getting 18-20 shots per game instead of the 13 he was getting his last year in Boston.
Yeah, is it realistic to expect him to go from GM to big man coach? That seems like a major stretch to me.
