This is the same guy who claimed that the mob had sent death threats to his family? Writing a "tell all" book about the mob seems counterintuitive.
He already was "Nancy Kerriganed"...might as go all the way. They probably already want to kill him. It my understanding that a prisoner cant make a profit by talking, writing about their crime...I sure hope thats true for him
He has no credibility IMO. But good luck to him with the book and all. I'm sure ESPN will be over it.
I don't think they can profit either but considering he continues to mess with the mob he's probably not all that bright.
that sort of criticism reminds me of another sports author. Jose Cansenco was up to his eyes involved with baseball's dirty secret making millions of bucks. But dude spent it all and found himself broke and desperate shortly after his playing days ended. Everyone laughed at his tell all book and revelations as he was clearly just a bitter dumb jock with no credibility. Since the league doesn't have any dirty secrets about manipulating game results, I'm sure they have nothing to worry about and this will all blow over. Unlike steroid use in baseball, the general public hasn't long suspected a thing was wrong with the credibility of the NBA. STOMP
His book is going to be a problem for the NBA simply because he will be saying stuff a huge number of people already suspect. The fact that it will contain some truth isn't going to help much either. No one can have watched the 2002 or 2006 playoffs without feeling they were rigged. At least, I don't know how you could.
First thing that came to mind. Stern has painted himself into a corner on this one saying Donaghy acted alone.
I am actually hoping it forces the NBA to bring in a bunch of new blood. I actually thought when we had the replacement refs a few years ago the reffing was much better than now.
Me too... but I am sure NBA is already practicing the line "you can't believe anything he says... he is a convicted felon" Now about new blood... you have a good point... I have long thought that NBA officials get worse the longer they are around... they start calling situations instead of actually watching the game closely. I am not sure how you can avoid that other than rotating them out... and then who would want to be an NBA official in the first place when it is only a 5 year gig.
I think Donaghy will have plenty of credibility. He doesn't have credibility as a referee, of course, but as a corrupt referee? All sorts of cred. I'm sure he knows a ton about any corruption in the system. Connected to STOMP's point, after the Canseco tell-all book, I think people are pretty willing to believe a corrupt individual about the corruption of the society he was a part of.
Just playing devil's advocate here, BUT... Many of the same things were said about Jose Canseco when he wrote Juiced. It's since been proven that no one has been more honest, accurate, and forthcoming about steroids in Baseball than Jose. Who knows, maybe this will have a similar effect... EDIT... hmm, looks like my point was already made...
For the record, the "mob ties" referred to in the posted article is the Stern/Silver/Granick Family. The NBA is as dirty my son's diaper pail. I hope these dealings are brought to light. Oh, yeah, Fuck Jess Kersey.
I agree with you Maxiep! I think I just heard Gabriel's trumpet too! But seriously, what is the crime family thing you are talking about can you elaborate? I too believe the NBA is as dirty as my son's diaper pail. See we have more in common then we thought. My son is 7 months old.
Many current NBA refs already were busted years ago for turning their first class tickets into coach and pocketing the money as income without paying taxes on it. Slap on the wrist, sentenced served, and we'll forget about how they compromised their integrity as they continue to make the WWE look legit by comparison. Why anyone would think that Donaghy was an isolated case baffles me.
