Another thing that people arent mentioning... Bayless is almost like adding another piece.. he will basically be guaranteed playing time now to develop.

I think KP and Tom Penn have a great handle on what it'll take to get the guys they want via trade or free agency or both, so if they're okay with adding a 1st round pick to the cap, so am I. I'm pretty excited to find out what they do, because there are a ton of options out there. We're just about the only team focusing on FA this year while most everyone else is focused on next year and that could help us.

If by 'whiffed' you mean we didn't do what you wanted, then you may be right. Otherwise, you really can't back that statement up. Not to mention that it's ridiculously obvious that we ARE going to do something substantial this offseason so freaking out about us NOT doing something before we're even allowed to do something is kinda funny.

Very similar to moving Randolph for Aldridge to play.

If Blake stays, and they add a real starting PG though, doesn't Bayless actually get less minutes?

I'm assuming that if they upgrade PG that Blake will have to be included.

partially yes. Although Aldridge was the unquestioned #1 PF after that. Bayless is still #2 PG

I'm not sure how this would work out. It looks like Blake and Bayless would be battling for the backup spot. I can't imagine a situation where we end up with only Blake and Bayless at PG, or where we end up with only [new starting PG] and Bayless. Nate and KP seem to want three. If we get Hinrich or Miller then Blake and Bayless will have to battle it out or they will have to pick up a third backup FA.

I kind of put Mills as the #3 PG. So if it was a PG like Hinrich.. including Blake in the deal.. then you have Kirk, Bayless Mills. Or insert another starting PG in there.

From what I understand, Petteri and Freeland do count toward our roster -- only during the offseason. So their cap hold is whatever their first-round rookie scale salary is for them at where they were drafted. That only counts in the offseason.
That makes it 12 filled roster spots. You forgot to include Channing, which makes it 13 since we haven't renounced him yet. Claver makes 14 so his $1.01 million salary counts as a cap hold this summer.
The roster charges of $450,000 only count when you're under 12 players, not 14. That's how I see it after reading Coon's site..

correct . Kop and Joel each have cap holds until the season starts of 864,000 each. and Claver of 1 mil. ish.

That gives Portland another 2.5 or so in additional cap space this winter if they do nothing before then.

So potentially we could set ourselves up for another summer free agency meltdown on this board if KP and the gang stand pat again and say we have another chance at the trade deadline. And considering KP has stated he hates making trades at the deadline, that could set us up for another meltdown. This is going to be classic.

My gut feeling is that with the team getting closer to contention - and with two chips that are attractive before the summer of '10 - there is a good chance he will be able to get attractive offers this year - if Travis and Blake are not moved beforehand.

    Yes, potentially.

What I think will happen is this

Blake and Outlaw will both stay.

Pritchard will go out and sign a PG

Then we will have an overload of people at PG and SF and there will be constant griping internally. the team will make the playoffs, but finish with a worse record.

Poeple will really start to question whether KP can ever make a trade involving his precious youth for a vet.

Freeland, Koponen, and Claver's cap hold will be counted in team salary this summer, but only players that are actually under contract count towards minimum and maximum roster size numbers.

One other point about the title of this thread, trades can happen between now and June 30 under the 08-09 year salary numbers. Once July 1 gets here, the league goes into lockdown on trades until the new salary cap is set. So, unless something happens in the next few days, there won't be any action until mid-July or later.

This is how I read it on Coon's site, in terms of roster charges:

Freeland, Koponen and Claver count as players on the roster as first-round draft picks, 'but' only in the offseason if you want roster charges to apply your cap.

I would believe that if we go out and get another vet PG (like Hinrich) that Blake would be part of the deal. Why do we need 3 PGs on the roster? If Blake/Hinrich start and Bayless is backup, Roy picks up minutes there as well. We have 2.5 PG that way. No way I see adding another PG and have Bayless AGAIN at 3rd off the bench...NO way.

We already have 3 with Crabby Patty Mills. I too, guess, that if we are getting a nice upgrade in PG - it means that Blake and his expiring contract goes out - and if we get a super-deluxe great PG (which is not likely to happen) - it means that JB goes out as a prospect for a rebuilding team.

The section you quoted from addresses how team salary is computed. If a team doesn't have at least 12 guys either under contract, as free agents, players given offer sheets, or first round picks, then a "roster charge" is added to the team salary number in an amount equal to the rookie minimum salary for each player that a team is below the 12 player minimum. The Blazers aren't in that position as of now. Yes, the Euro-stash guys count towards team salary during the summer months, but they don't count as taking one of the 12 minimum and 15 maximum roster spots.
