Do you think we will be able to grab him cheap if no one signs him soon? No way in hell I would feel good paying 10 mil. But 4 sounds good lol
I agree he is too told and can't hit 3's, and that's why he was far from tops on my list. However, to answer your questions, if we were able to sign him and Bass, then I would be happy to pick up two guys that give us different looks and options than Sergio and Frye did last year.
He can drive and dish though. That is what we need in a PG. Yes, I know. Bayless. But he hasn't got the dish thing down yet. Just drive.
The whole "can't hit a 3" complaint is overblown in my opinion. We need to get away from shooting so many jumpers and have a PG that can get to the lane and create shots for our bigs. I'll take a player like Miller that can do that over Steve Blake jacking up 3's any day.
Miller would instantly make Oden much more productive on offense. Miller would be able to run a pick-n-roll with Greg, get him the ball in scoring position, and drive-and-dish to Oden for dunks. If we could get Miller for cheap, for a couple years, I would be all for it.
Miller isnt really a good half court point guard, not a great fit for the slowest team in the league.
It depends how you're team is put together. If we've already got Oden & Lamarcus and Roy who can drive at will, we need people to stretch the defense, otherwise defenses will just sag back and our inside game will also suffer. On the other hand it would be nice to have a PG who could drive and set up our bigs and take the pressure off of Roy. Wish we could find one who could do both.
Look at his playoff numbers and regular season numbers from last year? You think he's not an upgrade to Blake, simply because Blake makes 13% more of his 3pt shots? Maybe Portland is trying to drive his price down, but I'm thinking the Sixers will probably resign him, because they really want him back.
Oden and LaMarcus can drive at will to the hole? I have to disagree with that statement. Roy and Bayless are the only guys that can drive on the team right now. Miller is a crafty vet that can deliver the ball to Oden & LMA is spots where thay can be successful.
That's my take on Miller in a nutshell. May as well keep Blake and hope Bayless progresses this summer.
Not what I meant... We have Oden and Lamarcus down low and we also have Roy who can drive so we need people to stretch the defense. I love ol' Greg, but I'm not going to say he can drive just yet.
That's a pretty myopic view of Miller's game. We need o reduce our reliance on outside jumpers for points, and actually take it inside to either score or get to the line. And 33 is not too old for what we want. We need a short term upgrade for the PG spot while Bayless develops.
For petes sake, he has never been able to shoot. He is a good defender, very good at scoring inside and running an offense. Oh, and by the way, he knows how to pass inside and run the pick and roll. A couple little things Blake and Bayless haven't seemed to be able to figure out how to do.
I need to trade phones with Andre, then... 'cause my god damn phone has been ringing off-the-hook all morning long!
I've posted this before in another thread somewhere in the past, but it's relevant here. You can't discount the "he can't shoot the three" argument just by saying "well, we need to reduce our reliance on outside jumpers anyway." The way this team is constructed, we mostly rely on Brandon to be our primary playmaker. If that's the case, you need to appropriately space the floor with guys who can set screens, flash to the rim, or hit outside jumpers, so you can maximize Brandon's abilities to create off the dribble. If we bring in a guy like Miller, we diminish Brandon's impact on the game as our offense currently stands. I'm not saying we couldn't change our offense to make Brandon play off the ball more, but I'm not sure I want to do that. If you consider Brandon in the same category of impact guys as Kobe, LeBron and D-Wade, you've got to maximize his skill set and let him create, just like those three do. Having a guy like Miller on the floor with him makes it easier for defenses to collapse on Brandon, rendering him much less impactful on a game.
of course one reason they go at a slower pace is that they don't have an athletic PG who can take people off the dribble and finish. Among Blake's positives is that he recognizes his limitations and doesn't try to more then he can, which is great and all but signing a PG like Miller would add a lot to a team's ability to run. While he isn't the outside shooter that Blake is, dude averaged 5 FTA a game last year to Steve's 1. He's not the ideal PG for Portland, but he'd be an upgrade. He's been an ironman missing only 5 games in his 10 year career and has remained very productive posting impressive PERs the last few seasons. Given his age and the market, I could live with PDX offering something around 7M per for 3 years. STOMP
I too find the "too old" argument amusing. We're not going to set LMA and Roy and Oden adrift when they're 32 or 33. They will still be core members of the team like the Celtics "big 3". as to the actual subject of the thread... I hope we can sign Miller on the cheap, $7 mil/year for 3 years.
