And yet, you run the risk of seeing your franchise player leave or not want to play for you anymore.

Hold out for two years? With a new CBA coming? When all you are bickering over is a few million over that time, or who has the option for the fifth year? He can hold out for that now, but I can't see him holding out over two years for it.

Both sides will come to a compromise, you just have to work your way to that point.

Then he would've just forgone the whole trip to Portland and dinner with Nate, and taken his ball to Toronto immediately. He gave his verbal commitment to Portland. The only question was whether he felt the city was the right fit for him.

If Brandon wants to leave over an option year or a few million, then he isn't the guy I thought he was.

Repeat after me: Negotiations take time, negotiations take time . . .

I thought he could become an RFA next summer. Somebody will surely max him then for 5 years. The Blazers can dick him around now only to pay him next year? He's not "under contract" for two more years. To be a UFA, sure, but he'll get a 5 year max, and if I'm him, I'd force my way out of Portland this summer to get it signed before October 31st.

"It's amicable," Pritchard said. "We plan to make it amicable. More importantly, Brandon and LaMarcus will be here for a long time."

In other words, more importantly than it being amicable . . . we control Brandon and LaMarcus and can fuck with them for the next three years. :D

If Paul Allen or Vulcans or whomever want their franchise player to leave over a few million, then he isn't the owner committed to winning that I thought he was either.

I wonder what team Roy is going to be on next. He'll be my favourite ex-Blazer.

How is Canzano overreacting? Roy will get a 5 year max deal from somebody next summer, and he won't play this year without a contract only to have Portland match next summer. Either give the man 5 years, or expect him to start questioning the franchise's loyalty to him.

If he does, Portland can match and that's that.

So you seem to basically be certain Roy will be a Blazer for a long time.

So....why not max him now instead of waiting a year of uncertainty to match a max offer?

This caught my eye. Whoever is posting that Roy has two more years under contract is incorrect, and to think he won't end up getting a 5 year max deal starting in 2010-11 is laughable. So, the question is, why dick with him now?

Because if Portland wants something else, like a 4 year deal, they may be able to get that done instead this off-season. The reason Roy might do that is because he still gets max dollars for four years, he doesn't risk a catastrophic injury taking away his earning value next season and he reaches his next (potentially even bigger) deal a year earlier.
