No, that seems pretty valid. You do think Roy might be ready to hold out. I wanted to know what quote from the interview made you feel that way.

Essentially zero. Are you trying to argue anything serious, or just amusing yourself with a silly semantic jihad? Either one is cool. :)

No, I said he might hold out. Not that he might be ready to hold out. Please stop making up what I have posted.

No player has ever demanded a trade before. As for semantics, I'm actually being quite literal. You seem to be taking liberty with what is posted. ;)

"Semantic jihad." I love that phrase, Minstrel.

Not because they were offered a 4 year max deal instead of a 5 year max deal, correct. Glad we agree!

Perhaps that's part of it, but for me, it was a function of the track record of the source of the information. It's like the little boy who cried wolf. Quick was embarrassingly wrong so many times in the past, now that he gets one right, nobody was willing to believe him.

I may give him a little more benefit in the future, but I will still wait for conformation from another source before I get too worked up over any rumors he breaks.

Actually Portland would save MILLIONS in that situation.

    Code:
    	        1 2 3 4 5 raise	Total
    5 yr max ext	13520000	14939600	16359200	17778800	19198400	1419600	81796000
    4 yr max ext	13520000	14939600	16359200	17778800 1419600	62597600
    5 yr off sheet	12500000	13500000	14500000	15500000	16500000	1000000	72500000

The maximum salary next year dips about $250k to $13,520,000. If the salary cap goes down to about $50m, then the maximum salary would dip about another million (when the salary cap was $49.5m in 2005-06, the maximum salary for 0-6 was $12m, so I gave another $500k cushion).

In addition to the lower starting salary, rasises are restricted to 8% when another team gives an offer sheet, rather than the 10.5% the Blazers can offer in an extension.

Portland would still end up paying $10m more by matching a max 5 year offer sheet, but they would save themselves almost $10m by giving him a 5 year max deal themselves.

    This is obscene.

I don't care if people are being rational about the money.

    Fuck that.

I bought season tickets because they drafted Roy. He has gotten better every year, even when I wasn't sure he could. He is, hands down, my favorite Blazer of all time. Humble, poised, talented he is everything the team wasn't during the Jail Blazer era.

He has put himself out into the public when he is a private individual at the team's request. He has done everything he could to erase the bad times from the cities memory.

If he doesn't deserve a max deal from this team, then I don't know who would.

I am sickened that any Blazer fan would feel otherwise.

I really don't think this is KP's doing. It has to be someone above him.

Most GMs in any sport, when they find an absolute diamond in a draft, do their best to keep him because the player makes them look extremely good. I can't imagine KP would try and be cheap, especially with Roy.

I'm pretty sure that the blazers as a business have been in the red several years now, and you can't think of a reason to be careful about negotiating 10s of millions of dollars sized contracts?

    It seems to me that
    1) Brandon hasn't been involved in contract negotiations before and doesn't know this is standard stuff. I doubt he has actually talked to KP, he's probably just listening to what his agent says. I don't particularly trust agents, so it is not surprising he's frustrated.

    2) If we all (me included) checked this DAMN, ADDICTING message board once a week instead of 8 times/day, then we wouldn't think that this is a big deal.

    3) This isn't really news, bring on summer league (Monday)!

I completely agree with this, but it makes one wonder what is going on when Leiweke is talking about Paul Allen "subsidizing" the team, and then Roy is being lowballed.

Yeah. I take this sort of thing pretty personally.

Having my favorite team jerk with my favorite player makes me feel sick inside.

Having other "fans" believe that is ok makes me feel worse.

oh the horror, would you promise not to post here as well?

deep breaths, in through the nose out through the mouth.... we're going to get through this trying time together. I'd imagine that the guy who drafted him (despite loud whining from most of this board) probably still recognizes Roy's value and will have him inked shortly... like he recently has promised will happen. Then the :NOTMARIS: contingent can get on to freaking out over the next unsettled matter.

Seems close enough to me, even if one has a few more words in it.

If you feel one is radically different than the other, though, we'll have to just leave it, I s'ppose. Doesn't seem important enough to argue at length over the precise difference.

Even if it's a pretty typical negotiation? Brandon being "frustrated" sickens you to your stomach? That seems like...a large reaction.

I wouldn't call negotiating over a 4 year max contract vs. a 5 year max contract "jerking" anyone around.
