What, the un-official thread that I made?

That has 9 pages of clutter.

The official notice was already in this thread toward the end.

Man, it'd be sweet if Utah doesn't match...

I don't think that this impacts Roy and his situation at all... at least not negatively. We know the Blazers had at least $50m over five years to spend on Hedo, and I would imagine that they have money slated to pay for Roy, Aldridge and Oden over the next few years.

I just wonder how they managed to lure Millsap in spite of Roy not feeling warm and fuzzy!

    Re: It is finally official.

Perhaps the 16 million payout in year one had something to do with it.

They front loaded a signing bonus to put the contract offer out of reach of Utah.

    Year........Salary.....................Bonus...... ..............Cap Hit..................Paycheck
    1..............$6,425,000............$1,575,000... .........$8,000,000.........$14,300,000
    2..............$7,065,000............$1,575,000... .........$8,640,000...........$7,065,000
    3..............$7,756,200............$1,575,000... .........$9,331,200...........$7,756,200
    4..............$8,502,696............$1,575,000... .......$10,077,696...........$8,502,696
    Totals......$29,748,896........................... ............$36,048,896.........$42,348,896

I stole this from a poster on Realgm.

It's how the deal could be structured. 14,300,000 is how much Millsap would be paid the first year. However, since the Jazz will be over the tax, they will also pay an extra 8,000,000 which is Millsap's cap hit. 14,300,000 + 8,000,000 = 22,300,000 for Millsap if the Jazz match.

I hope it's out of reach for Utah!

And, yes, I agree that money is the reason Millsap is coming to Portland to be a backup. Roy's reluctance to help the team out by recruiting players is not really a factor compared to the mighty dollar.

This is assuming there are no team or player options years--either of which would increase the bonus part up front. If there were two options years, then the first year hit goes from $14.3M up to almost $17.5M.

Wouldn't this put the Blazers over the cap as well, meaning they are willing to pay the tax?

Probably, if the cap goes down next year. Roy's and Aldridge's extensions won't kick in until the year after, so their tax hit will be significantly less than Utah's.

Also, the cap and the luxury tax threshold are two different numbers. I believe the Blazer will be over the cap, but try to stay below the luxury tax line.

No, if Millsap is signed to this offer, and the cap goes down 7-8 million like the memo said, we will be in the tax.

They're really giving Millsap a good amount of money. I don't understand doing this before you lock up Aldridge, or even doing it at all if you feel Aldridge is your guy for the next decade.

I'd be surprised if Aldridge isn't pissed.

I would say that it does.

Portland has Paul Allen, and even in the new era of economic uncertainty and badness, it's great to see him flex his liquidity muscles here.

Because it IS about liquidity here.

Can the Jazz get access to that much money next year? They presumably budgeted money for Millsap over the next four or five years... maybe even a bit more than this. But that money might be coming from future revenue, and they might have to work hard to free up enough money to pay Millsap this much this fast.

Not for 2009-2010, but maybe for the next year--if we keep everyone.

    From John Hollinger twitter"

"Blazers can give Millsap 4 yr, $28 mil plus $6 mil bonus up front. But the cap figure would still be 7.7 million, so no extra tax for Utah"
