It would also ruin Brandon's reputation as a team player for holding out over what is likely small issues. If Brandon wants to play hard ball, then he would play great for the next two years--having taken the teams qualifying offer--and then try the FA market.

Ed is right. Brandon holding out and ruining the team hurts him as much as them. Highly unlikely to happen.

There will be several teams with cap space next summer. How many of them do you think will tie up that money [precluding them from signing one of the big free agents] on a RFA that will likely be matched? My guess is not many.

IMO that's even worse, as Roy might then sign the QO and might become a UFA. AGH!

    Dude.

Did you read my post about this earlier? You didn't respond to it, and there's been a flurry of posts, so you might have missed it.

If Portland matches a max offer for five years offer sheet, they save TEN MILLION DOLLARS over extending him now, assuming the salary cap is about where it is reportedly going to be next year.

Ten million dollars is nothing to sneeze at. They've got BRoy by the short hairs and he and his people have to know it. It makes sense for him to sign for four year extension at what they're offering rather than signing an offer sheet with another team using a markedly lower max salary AND only 8% raises from the first year.

If that's how they're going to treat Roy, I hope he demands a trade next week in his "statement". I'll take his side over the assholes at Vulcan every and any day. You should not eff with your top talent like this, and really the only leverage Roy has is to force a trade.

You can take his side, but Portland still doesn't HAVE to trade him. He can sit out or he can pout. He'd be flirting with committing career suicide over... what?

Another year of security? Because he's being disrespected and is only getting LeBron James-/Chris Paul-like treatment?

He can also play the next two years as a Portland Trail Blazer, foregoing a guaranteed ~$50m for the next three years (three max years and the difference between a QO and a max salary in 2010-11) to enter the summer of 2011 as a free agent... assuming the NBA is even running that summer with an effective CBA.

He's not that stupid, is he?

    Hello darkness, my old friend
Play two seasons with no financial security? I'll believe that when I see it. And even if he becomes a UFA, Portland is still the team that can pay him the most.

Takes a lot of hatred to turn down the biggest contract. I don't think 4 year max deal versus 5 year max deal creates that kind of hatred.

Just because you keep posting this over and over and over does not make it true. Those players dictated the years they received; for you to call that "irrelevant" is an oversight at best, or ignorance at worst.

He's getting offered the EXACT SAME contract as every other max-type player recently (other than Carmelo Anthony) has received after his rookie scale contract: four years of max money.

You acting like that has not established a precedent is weird.

Also, I'm waiting for you to give an example of how Brandon Roy can be playing for another team before the 2011-12 season without the Blazers permission.

You said my statement was simply not true, and I'm waiting for you to support that with an example of how events might transpire.

Yeah Roy isn't going to play two years without a guaranteed longer salary - not with his knee history.

How do you know those players weren't offered five year contracts, only to want less years for their own flexibility? Link? You seem certain about your stance. Give me a link that shows that Cleveland did not want to lock James up for five years.

"Permission" sounds so slave-like, Ed. As does your view on how to treat African-American workers from a lily-white Vulcan office while being in a lily-white community. If it is about "permission", then why offer Roy anything at all? Clearly, you have no experience on how to treat elite talent, especially when the Vulcans offer Hedo five years and Roy four years. Roy has made the team much more than a few million dollars on a rookie contract. Shitting on him now, as you seem to advocate, puts you in Vulcanland for me.

Look, has Hedo ever had a history of injuries? He plays below the rim and there is very little to be worried about with him getting hurt. Roy on the other hand has had multiple "issues" and its just a result of his style of play (which I love but it does worry me long term). As he gets older this is going to catch up to him big time. I don't blame the Blazers for being a little concerned about paying $13+ mill for a guy that can potentially be injured that fifth year of the contract.

What, he has exactly four years left on his knee, but not five? :biglaugh:

Haha. Train has left the rails.

This thread definitely delivers on amusement.

An absurd point to counter Ed's absurd LBJ/Wade point. Both have as much relevance to the topic at hand.

    ...okay?

That probably wont change his knee history, though.
