It's a lot different when you're actually the one paying.

It's easy to say "Oh, it's not that bad, they'll match" from an outsiders perspective, but that money is a hell of a lot to pay, especially for someone who's not really a star. They will match it only if they can dump Boozer for cap, which they probably can.

I doubt that has anything to do with it. With a 4 year deal, we have 2 years of Millsap under the current CBA. The 2011-2012 season will be sacrificed to the lock-out/labor war. That leaves 1 year under the new CBA for the team to evaluate how they are going to restructure the roster. Same logic applies to Roy and LMA.

Kevin O'Conner Gm of the Jazz says they will match. It's what I would do. When the salary cap lowers next year the Jazz are going to be over anyhow, so they won't be able to add any talent. Boozer will be hitting the road then. Who will play power forward then? They will match Millsap.

I agree, but teams don't always behave logically where $$$ are at stake.

If I remember correctly, Charlotte is looking for a center so they can move Emeka to the four.

The only team, IMO, that could make a play for Boozer is Miami.

Nice idea, but there is no way the BobCats take on Boozer. First, because Larry Brown would hate him. Second, the team is for sale and is more likely to be trying to cut payroll now, rather than next summer.

What impact does the "hefty signing bonus" have on the luxury tax issue for the Jazz? If it all counts this year when the Jazz are already at $73MM (if I remember right), then it might be a solid "toxic" contract. Anyone know how that works? Do we know what the $ amount of the hefty bonus is?

Edit: disregard. The deseretnews article covers this. Apparently the bonus is spread out according to a "complex formula".

I was thinking of places Utah could trade Boozer if they matched Millsap's deal and thought of GS as a possible destination. Turns out they have a few pieces we could use. Here's an idea:

Monta/Turiaf to Portland (total incoming salary: $15.140mil; total outgoing salary: $7.6mil; we'd have to renounce the Euros).

Blake/Outlaw (or Webster) to Utah. (total incoming salary: $7.6mil; total outgoing salary: $12.323mil; they can get under the tax level immediately).

Boozer to GS (total incoming salary: $12.323mil; total outgoing salary: $15.140mil; we can throw in Webster if needed).

A look at our roster if this happens:

    Starters: Ellis/Roy/Batum/Aldridge/Oden

    Bench: Bayless/Rudy/Turiaf/Przybilla.... Webster.

That roster gets you to the WCFs easily.

There are other teams that could make a deal work as well.

Sacramento is about $6M under the cap, so they could absorb Boozer by sending a much cheaper player or two back. Actually that's sort of similar to how the Kings too a shot on Webber all those years ago.

The Mavs have the mostly NG contract of Greg Buckner. They could combine that with other filler, offer it for Boozer, and give the Jazz $5-6M in immediate savings too.

Also, though the Grizz don't have any obvious need of Boozer, they could facilitate a deal to a third team. EG, Knicks trade Cuttino Mobley's mostly insurance covered to the Grizz, along with cash and a pick, and the Jazz send Boozer to the Knicks.

Yep I agree completely. But at the same time, if nothing else at least we took a shot at jacking a conference rival. That's the nasty side of KP we haven't seen yet. I think he may have finally got mad. When I have seen him in interviews, KP does not look like a happy guy. He looks like a guy who is seriously pissed. I hope that is not what is effecting negotiations within the team.

I heard on the radio that it counts towards the cap on an evened out basis, but for LT purposes it all counts on the LT for year 1.

I wouldn't be that upset about this, as it leaves us with time to make a lopsided trade after the season starts and it means that Utah is forced to try to make a trade to avoid LT hell this next year if my post above is correct. Utah is screwed either way.

If they manage to dump Boozer for cap, we just spent a ton of time on nothing.

Utah is not "Screwed" either way though. They've been trying to unload Boozer for awhile now. We are just speeding up the process.
