I didn't realize Millsap was a part of the TEAM USA event. You know they are practicing for 2 days and then the 3rd day there is some big scrimmage. I wouldn't be surprised if ESPN doesn't show that.

Millsap is many things to many people. Capable of hitting the corner three is not one of those things.

I thought he was a Boozer clone.

He's not. He has a bit less offensive game than Boozer but is a much better defender. They are equivalent rebounders.

Going from combine numbers, Millsap and Martell are very close in athletic ability.

    Paul Millsap:
    Lane agility: 11.67
    3/4 sprint: 3.30
    Vertical: 32.5
    Rank: #38

    Martell Webster
    Lane agility: 11.39
    3/4 sprint: 3.39
    Vertical: 30.5
    Rank: #58

Well, anything is possible but his agent is marketing the Millsap brand. He sure hasn't shown an ability to hit three-pointers in the NBA to date.

That doesn't quite answer my question of how we can offer him $11.9M this year (signing bonus included) when we only have $7.7M or so available under the cap... What provision allows that and why?

As for the 2nd part, we're not anywhere close to the luxury tax, are we? Or does the signing bonus get treated as a luxury tax item regardless of where the overall payroll sits?

This seems like a big piece of the equation that isn't adding up...

The signing bonus counts towards the cap, split over the four years. Essentially, the caphold of signing Millsap will be 7.7 Million. (6.2 Million + 1.5 from the split signing bonus) - 6 Million/4 Years.

We're not close to the luxury tax. Utah would have to pay 11.6 Million + 7.7 Million which is Millsap's caphold.

The signing bonus is spread out over 4 years for cap purposes but paid in full to Millsap in 7 days.

If you don't have the bootlegs, you haven't really had the "Millsap experience."

Even if they can come up with the cash, that's a pretty stiff blow to even a multi-millionaire's wallet in the short term. I was pretty sure Utah would match, but now I'm starting to seriously wonder.

Ha! Well so much for their liquidity problems, now it just becomes an issue of cap space and their ability to work out a deal where they essentially dump Boozer for cap space with OKC ... I'm back to thinking they match.

That's true, so they can come up with the cash, in terms of liquidity. It doesn't diminish the financial blow, though. That money was surely already expected (roughly, the exact figure may not have been known) so is already factored into their supposed inability to afford both Boozer and Millsap.
