Hedo will improve the Raptors. So apparently why BC will regret this is because Hedo will tie up Toronto' salary cap space up in the future. After this summer, IMO, this whole salary cap flexiblity is overrated.

Also if Toronto's concern is they are going to lose Bosh, shouldn't BC be doing everything possible to show Bosh the Raps are committed to winning including going out and getting one of the top sought after free agents of the summer?

Being stuck with an overpaid aging player isn't good, but it's part of NBA and GM's can often use big expiring contracts to their advantage. I don't see Hedo being that hard to package in three years.

Toronto, Ptd . . . signing Hedo to a 5 yr big contract is/was not going to be some "huge mistake" for either club.

Turkoglu reminds me of a worse, taller version of Steve Smith. Nice shooter, big, good passer, decent handle for his size, forgettable (at best) defense. Smitty had a post game, but Hedo is better at feeding the post. Smith was a better scorer and rebounder.

Smitty was a nice guy and I liked him when he was here, but he was pretty much done by age 32.

Imagine paying Steve Smith the kind of money Turkoglu will be getting when he's 34. *shiver*

Actually, Durant has averaged more points per game then his team has averaged wins.

In all fairness they did have PJoke Carlisimo as their "coach" for 1.5 of Durant's two years in the league.

There is a decent chance that Oden never has the impact Durant will have. I don't believe that will be true, but I do have to admit the possibility.

AND he won't get them close to, or winning a championship. That is the real issue.

If a very good team paid Hedo $53million over 5 years, and he got them over the top for 2 or 3 of those years, then you take 2-3 championships and happily overpay him for his last 2 declining years.

Toronto is NOT a very good team, and Hedo might help them win a few more games in the first round. Nothing approaching a title.

    Wrong, IMO.

While I think it would have been a mistake for Portland to sign Hedo to that huge contract, Portland is closer to the type of team I describe above. There would have been more of a chance for Hedo to push Portland over the top for winning titles than for him to push Toronto over the top for winning titles.

wasn't that one of the reasons why the team ended up trading him to the Spurs? He wanted an extension, but TB (wisely) said no. Wasn't the rumor that Smith basically forced his way off Portland, and thought the Spurs would give him one (tho they didn't)?

He was done pretty much a year after we traded him (tho his last productive season was pretty good).

I just looked at his stats, and it's amazing how much useless info my mind has lost. If you had asked me to swear up and down on a bible that Steve Smith was drafted by the Heat but almost immediately traded to the Hawks in his rookie year, I would have. He wasn't traded until his 3rd year in the league.

Smith was a good player for Portland, and of all the moves TB did getting Smith was my favorite trade.

I don't remember the specifics, but I remember we got Derek Anderson and Steve Kerr and they got Smith.

Who would've guessed that Steve Kerr was the best value in that deal.

DA wanted out of SA and agreed to sign, as a free agent with Portland (I believe for the MLE). There was already a PT controversy at SG in Portland (Smitty had already lost his starting spot to Bonzi). When Smitty heard the Blazers were signing DA he knew his PT would be further reduced. So, he demanded that the Blazers either sign him to an extension, or trade him. They obliged him by trading him to SA for a re-signed DA + Steve Kerr.

I agree with Chutney, as always. I love the signing, and I will until I see that Hedo gives up on us.
