OK, as some of you might know, I just got a new HDTV. With that, I've been perusing the AVS board. In doing so, I noticed that, because I have cable (as opposed to satellite), I'm sacrificing screen quality due to the compression of the signal. Hence, I could expect to see some speckling and/or other types of image degradation.

Hmmmmmmm.............didn't know that. I wonder if I should be concerned?

All digital video is compressed except for blu ray.

I wouldn't worry about it but...

what kind of cable to you have coming from the cable box to the TV? I know that Comcast includes Component Video cable with their box. It's 5 cables in on ribbon.

If that is what you are using you should unplug it and get a HDMI cable.

The cable box will have an output for it and your new TV should have 3 or 4 HDMI inputs. Fred Meyer's sells a 6ft one for $20 but if you want to drive to Fry's in Wilsonville you can get the same cable for $4.99.

Have you completely geeked out yet and used your new TV for your computer monitor?

Really?!? Oh man, sorry about that. I guess I should have warned you.

Hey, the Reds? I just assumed that you'd be a Braves fan.

Nahh, just having a little Saturday morning fun. I may have just moved back from Georgia, but I'm not that out of touch.

Hey, man, we need to get the guys (you, me, Wooks, Beastie, Lanny) together and do a Blazer game! Or, at least watch one together at a local sports watering hole.

Sounds good to me. Or maybe the Civil War game. I'm a Duck fan and Lanny and Wookee are beaver fans. Could be fun.

One thought is to tailgate down there, then watch the game at a local establishment. Should be a raucous atmosphere!

Verizon doesn't compress HD I don't think. HD will still look OK on cable though... just not as good. Definitely get Blu ray player for movies.

Be careful with how much you learn. I'm an AVS'er as well. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss. My eye's have been trained to expect a certain level of picture quality. Think more $$$.

I don't believe so. In fact, I've seen/heard a side-by-side comparison against DishNetwork. Stark contrast in both picture AND sound.
