    I would argue that:

    A) Oregon does a better job with their marketing. We've had some good campaigns at OSU but for many years there was nothing.
    B) Being the primary engineering school I know from personal experience that many of the eng alum just aren't that into football...at least college football.
    C) Strictly in terms of football you have to remember that we've only had relative success in a recent period of history. All those kids who went to OSU during most of the 70's and most of the 80's probably have very few fond memories of going to the game. Yes, I know, it's more about the environment/enjoyment than the win/loss, but sometimes a win can make things better. I would suspect in another 5-10 years we'll see some decent "returns" from students who were here during the winning seasons.

ticket availability may have more to do with the opponent this week. The Sun Devils aren't very sexy or cool at 4-5 and they're going with a freshman QB making his first start.

I didnt receive any emails from people selling their tix the week before the WSU game. We all know that WSU is much worse than ASU.

I'm sorry but I completely disagree and I don't know what you're basing that on. Are SOME fans bandwagon fans? Certainly. Hell I even know a few who I'd consider bandwagon Duck fans. But "majority" is not even close to being true. I'd say that 90% of the Duck fans I've met either went there and/or have close friends/relatives who went there (or are currently going there).

    apples and oranges

that was early in the season and the forecast wasn't for a steady drizzle. I'm sure Duck fans can come up with their own guesses as to why you're coming to such negative conclusions.

Based on my friends, family, and co-workers (tons of sports fans at my work). I'd say that 80% of them root for the Ducks, 10% root for the Beavs, and 10% dont care or root for other teams. Of that 80% that are Duck fans, only about 15% of them attended U of O or have family who graduated from there. You'd need a campus 10 times the size of what it is currently if the majority of local Duck fans did in fact go to school there etc.

what fraction of a single percentage point do you figure those people you're siting make up of the overall Duck fanbase?

Start a poll... ask every Duck fan you see if they went to school at U of O. Dare ya! :devilwink:

My only point was that there are far more Duck fans than Beaver fans... for various reasons. The most obvious to me is because the Ducks are the "cool" team to root for.

Let's face it, in the Portland market, you've essentially got the Blazers, Ducks and Beavers as sports teams that are relevant nationally. So it's no surprise that football fans in the area, regardless of where they went to school, identify with one or both of the teams.

Same shit happens down in Los Angeles. They don't have a NFL team, so a bunch of the fans that watch USC games didn't go to school there. It's just their local version of a significant football team in the Los Angeles area.

You can run down the list of some of the most recognizable college football teams, and I guarantee you a large part of their attendance is based on people who are just fans of the team and not necessarily alums. LSU, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Tennessee, Penn State, etc. You think they are selling out 70,000-100,000 seat stadiums based on alumni?

But I certainly wouldn't paint these fans with a broad brush as "bandwagon."

well I live in SF so it wouldn't be as hard as you're thinking. I'll just have to ask my college friends that I'm watching the game with this Saturday where they went to school and then I'll be about done :ghoti:

Further proof that the Ducks are far more popular than the Beavs is that the Ducks have The Game (FM) and CSN (TV)... the Beavs have KPAM (AM). Yay!

This is the point. Why do those people support the Ducks instead of the Beavers? It is because, as Beerboy said, it is more "cool" and "hip" to be a Ducks fan.

maybe other reasons too.. I grew up with an unwritten rule that my dad and I dont root for the same teams.. maybe thats the case too lol. My dad is a Laker fan, Dodger fan, and Rams fan. I am a Blazer fan, Yankee Fan and a Broncos fan. He is a USC fan and I am a Duck fan. Just saying you never know ;) it certainly wasnt cool to be a Duck fan in the early 90s

Yep, and props to the Ducks for raising their profile enough to be the obvious choice for most otherwise unaffiliated college football fans in the region.
