Not at all. Bones heal to 100%. If he would have torn his patella tendon or some ligaments, then we'd be in deep yogurt. All he will do is miss the season. He'll be back at full strength next year.
Sure if he had torn his ACL or patellar tendon, for instance, that probably would have been the worst possible thing (other than a crazy Shaun Livingston style "blow the entire knee up" thing). But a dislocated patella and he would have been back in a couple months.
I concerned about his tendons/ligaments because his knee was pretty twisted when he way laying on the ground. We'll probably have to wait until tomorrow to find out how bad it really is.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-trailblazers-odeninjured&prov=ap&type=lgns Blazers’ Oden expected to miss rest of season 9 minutes ago PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Portland center Greg Oden(notes) will likely miss the season after fracturing his left knee cap during a game against Houston on Saturday night. Oden will undergo surgery, the Trail Blazers said. The 7-foot center dropped to the floor clutching his left knee and grimacing after colliding with a driving Aaron Brooks(notes) midway through the first quarter. He was almost immediately surrounded by trainers and physicians. The crowd at the Rose Garden stood and chanted “Oden! Oden!” The game was stopped for some 7 minutes. Finally, Oden was gently moved to a stretcher and wheeled from the court. He underwent an MRI shortly thereafter. Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft out of Ohio State, has been plagued by injures for his entire NBA career. The 7-footer missed rookie season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee. Last season, Oden sat out six games after injuring his right foot in the season opener against the Lakers, then missed 14 games after the All-Star break with a bone chip in his left knee. He finished the season averaging 8.9 points and 7 rebounds. Oden lost weight during the offseason and was averaging 11.7 points and 8.8 rebounds this season as a starter. The Blazers have been beset by injuries. Starting forward Nicolas Batum(notes) needed shoulder surgery just before the opener. Fellow forward Travis Outlaw(notes) fractured his foot in mid-November and required surgery. Forward Rudy Fernandez(notes) was out of Saturday night’s game with sciatic pain and set to undergo an MRI. It was uncertain if he would be with the team on an upcoming four-game road trip starting with the Knicks on Monday. Even coach Nate McMillan was set to undergo surgery Monday after rupturing his right Achilles’ tendon during practice. The coach was participating in practice because the team is so short-handed. He will miss the team’s upcoming road trip, replaced by assistant coach Dean Demopoulos.
Yeah, but with a dislocation generally comes a ligament or tendon tear or at least a stretch. However, if the patella just slipped the joint, I agree with you that would have been the best news. I just am so thankful that no ligaments or tendons were torn. Those have long term impacts to his athleticism.
That sucks so much for Greg. Wasn't this coming summer where he could negotiate an extension? I don't know how much we're going to invest in him.. whether it'd be long term, or a lot of money.
This picture shows it pretty well: http://media.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/photo/greg-odenjpg-b860a6ea32e477ae.jpg As you can see, the kneecap is off to the side, which is why I thought/was hoping that it was just a dislocated kneecap. The knee is "twisted' simply because he moved it that way so he could hold it while he was on the ground.
This is just horrible. Next season was supposed to be his 4th season. As it is, has even played 82 games yet?
It depends, really. Generally on a non-contact injury like that the tissue in the knee isn't hurt. One of my buddies was going up for a lay in once and was run into by a guy who was trying to block it. He landed directly on the side of the knee and tore his ACL as well as popped the kneecap out of place. He was out for a long time. Really sickening to look at when the kneecap is out like that. I knew another guy who simply twisted his knee the wrong way and had the kneecap pop out, but no other additional damage done. He was back, playing basketball, in a couple months. Also, yeah. I am definitely "glad" that it's just a fractured bone vs. a torn ligament.
...and Kevin Durant starts winning multiple championships in 5....4....3....2.... (sorry no disrespect, I can find humor in really bad stuff)
There is no humor in this, and why you would do that with Bynum's injury history and the pain that causes is pretty pathetic and sad.
I think we all know that that discussion is going to be talked to death for the next 9 months. And we also know we'll have people coming in bitching about Greg's injuries etc, for the next 9 months. I'm surprised people haven't declared Greg a bust and think they should trade him. Why can't we be like a normal franchise anyways?
