Yesterday, the Washington Post reported Gilbert Arenas had been charged with felony gun possession. It's a crime that carries a maximum penalty of five years in jail if convicted.

Yet, the paper is reporting today that Arenas has reached a plea deal, one that is expected to limit his time behind bars or perhaps even eliminate any jail time. He's expected to plead guilty today in court.

So what does this mean for Gil's future with the Wizards? Well, as ESPN's J.A. Adande noted this morning on TrueHoop, Arenas's felony charge could give the Wizards fair game to void his contract.

Whether they'll actually do it or not remains to be seen.

"It also could pave the way toward an easier road to termination of Arenas' contract, which has four years and approximately $80 million remaining after this season. The uniform player contract allows teams to void contracts if a player shall 'at any time, fail, refuse, or neglect to conform his personal conduct to standards of good citizenship, good moral character (defined here to mean not engaging in acts of moral turpitude, whether or not such acts would constitute a crime), and good sportsmanship...' That is a both all-encompassing and vague definition ... As far as criminal behavior, there have been countless misdemeanors that have received only minor suspensions from the league, including a seven-game suspension for Stephen Jackson for firing a gun outside an Indianapolis strip club in 2006. A felony charge leaves no gray area. Nor is there much room for feelings ... The fact that Arenas, who already has a misdemeanor weapons possession case on his record, could blatantly disregard the NBA and the District of Columbia's gun regulations then act so cavalier in public afterward, brought on the league-imposed indefinite suspension and could set the stage for termination. I heard on the radio Gilbert Arenas also had a prior misdemeanor charge on his record relating to carrying a fire arm. DC takes their gun laws serious and we saw what happened to Plaxico Burress when the Mayor put pressure on the DA to throw the book at him. Should be interesting to see the type of sentencing Arenas gets.

Gilbert Arenas is expected to plead guilty today to a single felony count of carrying a pistol without a license in exchange for avoiding jail time.

Arenas is currently suspended by the league for his behavior after the incident. The final straw happened when Arenas pretended his hands were guns during the announcement of the starting lineups. A source close to the point guard says Arenas told NBA investigators that he did that because he doesn't feel the Wizards were supporting him.

"If your own franchise, the people you considered family, weren't there for you when you needed them most, would you want to play for them and be around them anymore?" the source told The Washington Post. Arenas "was wrong for bringing guns into the locker room, and it's going to mean pleading guilty to a felony. It's serious business. But the way this came out and how Ernie Grunfeld and the organization handled the facts makes you wonder if he will ever play for them again."

Another source tells the newspaper that peace between the team and the player would be difficult if Arenas can't be traded and his contract can't be voided.

"Until Gilbert realizes none of this would have happened if he hadn't brought guns in the locker room and accepts responsibility for his actions, he won't be welcomed back anywhere," said the source.

the prosecutor is recommending "no jail time" so thats an obvious good sign for arenas
