Nice, thanks for posting the link.

Glad to hear Joel is making progress and keeping his spirits up. I'm looking forward to having him and Oden back next season.

Yea just keep in mind that is not the beginning of next season. This injury is supposed to be out a year minimum, and that would put him back halfway through next season.

Good report. The dude's definitely tough. I wish him nothing but the best as he works to get back into playing shape by fall camp.

He will be nowhere near ready by fall camp.

Not according to the articles I've seen on the web. Six months to a year seems to be the standard time estimate. With the kind of physical therapy available to Joel and his work ethic, I think it's not unrealistic for him to be back by the start of camp.

Well we will have to agree to disagree. This same injury ended Damon Stoudemires caereer. Top it off with the fact that most players who rupture a muscle tend to not be at 100% until the second season after their surgery. Secondly, I have seen nothing to indicate what you state above is true. I haven't seen any articles, or any doctors commenting on it which indicate it is only a 6 month heal, and I don't know anybody who would feel a muscle rupture would be a 6 month out and back. Muscle ruptures are serious shit. Like 1 year (not season) of out minimum.

I thought the prognosis was he could be back by the start of training camp - at least that's what Joel seems to think:

"Przybilla will probably remain in his leg brace for at least one more month, but he said he hopes to be jogging by the end of the season. His goal is to be 1 00 percent healthy by the time training camp starts next season."

If that wasn't a realistic goal, I think the doctors and trainers would have told him so. This is a torn patellar tendon, not microfracture surgery. I've read of recovery times as short at 3 - 4 months, but a more conservative approach is 6 months prior to resuming full contact participation. That would allow Joel another three months to get in shape before the start of training camp. Here's a good link to an article on patellar tendon surgery with a post surgical time table on the third page of the article: warning, there are some "graphic" images of the surgical procedure - not for the squeamish.

First, he ruptured a tendon, not a muscle. Second, please read the article I linked in my previous post. 6 month post surgery before resuming full contact participation is pretty standard for this type of injury. It will be over 10 months from the date of Joel's surgery to opening night of the 2010-11 season. That gives him the standard 6 months of recovery and four more months to get in shape before the start of the season.

So either the beginning of training camp, or at worst (hopefully) he'll be present for the final 50-60 games. In any case, if you're going to be missing a guy, better that it be at the beginning of a season than at the end.

We need to set up an over/under prediction for how many games Joel plays next season. If the line is in the 50-60 range, I will take the under.

Damon played two more seasons after his ruptured patella tendon "ended his career".

Joel will be back hopefully by the start of next season. Shouldn't be much longer than that.
