Oregon isn't allowed to have a "rainy day fund"? If so, it seems a ballot measure should fix that issue.

Oursource the critical components such as food safety. Problem solved.

Frankly, I'd be in favor of firing every government employee every few years and have them reapply for their position. We'll see if we still need them and if they're still the best person for the position.

Do you even read what you post?

Apparently you've never had to hire a staff. :dunno:

Your applicants for a temporary position with a written FUCK YOU! already written into the description will be exclusively limited to meth heads, identity thieves, and terrorists needing access to our food and drug supply.

    Spot on.

    BTW, what is your occupation?

For the chance to help a fellow Blazers fan realize his dream home, I'll gladly make some employment inquiries for you.

This brings up a prime example of the stupidity of "freedom from property tax" deals to attract businesses.

Prineville's largest employer is/was Les Schwab, with around 1000 employees. He has enjoyed several huge tax exclusion deals from the city over the last few decades. The city could not afford to subsidize him any longer as his business has all but worn out their infrastructure.

In gratitude for Prineville citizens paying his way and making him filthy rich, he immediately jumped ship and is moving his headquarters about 20 miles to Bend, because certain city councilors in his pocket gave him a sweetheart deal to move to their so far mythical "Juniper Ridge" industrial park, which citizens were not allowed to vote on. Bend's citizenry is nearly unanimous in its outrage and recall elections have been threatened, lawsuits have been threatened, and a few politicians will likely have to find other regions of the country to pursue their careers. Bend has spent quite a few million dollars they didn't have planning the complex that nobody wanted and heads are going to roll.

It didn't help that Schwab has been successfully sued several times in recent years for discriminating against women in his employ.

As for bringing jobs to Bend? None at all. Many of the current employees already live in Bend, the rest in Prineville (20 miles away) so no job changes are expected at all.

If it succeeds, which is doubtful at the moment, all it will bring Bend is higher taxes, unbearable traffic, and a more rapid decline of the infrastructure.

    Absolutely they do.

Whether its spoiled rich-kid, Ivy League slacker and dropout Paul Allen building and running his huge companies, or immigrant and widowed father of 3 young children Bob Hernandez working the day shift managing an auto parts store and (by necessity) also working the night shift delivering pizzas.

It's probable that Bob does, and always has, worked a bit harder than Paul ever has.

In fact, it's not only probable, it's indisputable.

Bob knows he will never be able to send his kids to college, he worries he will have nothing to leave them but advice when he dies.
He is nagged by guilt that he can't afford dental care for them as his company only provides medical health insurance.
Bob pays his taxes each year and never asks for special treatment.
Bob is proud to be an American and support his country, grateful to have the opportunity to do so.
Bob has a few very close friends who would give their right arm if he needed help, but they know he'd refuse it.
Bob has no money left after paying taxes, but maybe he could get a third job?

Paul knows he has more money than all the citizens of several states, he worries that Forbes keeps pointing out Gates has even more money (haha).
He is nagged by fans of the Major League Sports Teams he owns as he sometimes drafts inconsistent players. Paul pays lawyers and accountants to hide his money from the government, to negotiate backroom deals and lobby for tax exclusions and any other special treatment he can get.
Paul is proud of his many yachts, planes, rocket ships, mansions, grateful that he has always received preferential treatment in life which allowed him to accumulate such obscene wealth.
Paul has no friends at all, so he hires celebrities to be seen with him and attend his yacht parties.
Paul has billions of dollars left after paying his taxes.

I've hired hundreds of people and fired several. See, I've actually run real businesses. I know as a former government employee, you believe it's your right to suck off the public teet for doing nothing. I believe people should work with the Sword of Damocles hanging over their head, ESPECIALLY if they're being paid by the taxpayer. If they don't like it, they can quit. They won't be missed.

As for who would apply for a government job, I agree it attracts the bottom of the barrel. I just want to have the ability to reconsider the structure of the agency and the work it's doing.
