    Having some issues with my srt-4 and i really need some insight

    knocking sound coming from the front of the car when driving between 0-20 mph

    not the axle, possibly transmission, sounds a lot worse and louder in the morning (cold)

    i will go in more detail if ANYONE can help

    Check for road kill.

    You really seem to notice when a small animal gets jammed up there at the lower speeds.

    All the time, or only when the car is moving?

    Loud in morning makes me think of a piston (past experience). Is the oil okay?

    Sounds like it's a lubricated part anyway, which means it needs to be replaced before it fails.

    Hard to put a noise on paper.

    Maybe Bintim has a brother whose an auto mechanic? :dunno:

    It sounds exactly like an axle going out but its not the axle.

    The frequency increases with the speed, from 5-20mph, its only louder in the morning or when it is cold.

    I have heard it might be the differential in the tranny but i really dont want that to be the prognosis

    Is it off center to left or right? And does it happen more when turning as opposed to going straight? If yes to both, it could be the CV joint/CV boot. I had that happen once and it made an awful racket up front near one wheel at low speeds mostly and generally seemed worse when the car was cold. (though that could have been because I was turning that direction more often on the way TO work as opposed to on the way home.) SRT-4 though...what is it? 6-8 years old? Seems a bit quick for a CV boot to wear out. Could happen though.

    Im almost certain its nothing to do with the axle/cv joint

    the noise is in the middle, exactly where the tranny is.... :sigh:

    When was the last time you check the spark plugs? Did a fuel system clean (chevron 8 oz bottle)?

    First thought is knocking/pinging. Second is a busted motor mount or possibly broken fan shroud.

    Definitely take it to a mechanic to pinpoint what it is and get it fixed. Here's a list of things that cause the sound all bad for your car.

    Other mechanical problems that lead to engine knocking are:

    Defective main crankshaft bearings
    A cracked or broken flywheel or flex-plate that attaches the engine to the transmission
    A worn water pump bearing
    A failed or loose timing belt tensioner can knock when the timing belt slaps against it
    An air conditioning compressor can knock when it is failing or icing up
    An alternator with worn rotor bearings can knock when the pistons fire
