    No, it hasn't.

No strictly half-court team has ever won a title. Not a single one.

No strictly fast-break team has ever won a title either.

All Championship teams have used the full arsenal of weapons at their disposal, whether it's pace, roster depth, a hot hand, lockdown defense, intimidation, or flopping and whining when all else fails, adjusting from game to game depending on their opponent.

ALL Championship teams have had a coach who understands the need to do this.

    Agreed...

e_blazers point was well thought out, as was yours about the correlation between fast break points and wins.

It's meaningless as an accurate measure of fast break points.

Some things are simply unmeasureable, but you know them when you see them.

I was being serious, but now I remember it was Maurice Cheeks and not Nate McMillan that was the soap opera fan. I remember him talking about it in an interview on the radio. He really likes Young and the Restless. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/2008-04-03-468437830_x.htm
    Kind of weird, huh?

Fast break points do not equal wins on their own any more than a strong half court game does.

It doesn't have to be either or and probably should be a nice balance mixed in with some unquantifiable intangibles, some good bench play, 47 lucky bounces a coach that knows his limits and hopefully his players abilities.

This whole idea that you can't have an eye ball opinion anymore because heart rate stats on players must be taken into consideration is just bullshit.

I 100% agree it doesn't have to be an either or.

Eye ball opinions are still very important, as long as they are taken in full perspective. This isn't a jab at you personally, but I've noticed a lot of people around here have the "grass is greener on the other side" view of things. They think most teams have a lot more sets than us and that we run only one or two plays. They think other teams run these awesome plays and are not the least bit predictable, but that simply isn't true either. Based on all the games I've logged, I would rank Portland in the top half for variety of sets. They are average or slightly above when it comes to predictability down the stretch. They are much better in the ball movement category than lots of teams (I'd guess top 7-8).

Nate is not a perfect coach, and perfect coaches don't exist. I still think he's one of the top coaches in the league and I have a hard time coming up with any feesable replacements for him that would be better. I wish we ran the ball more, I wish he coach get LMA to grow some stones down the stretch, I wish Nate could turn Bayless into a point guard.

Outside of Rick Adleman, the best coaches in the league are very stubborn and demanding their teams play the game their way. Phil Jackson, Jerry Solan, Greg Popovich, and even Mike D'Antoni (I know he shouldn't fall in this group) are total control freaks. Now the problem with being a control freak, is if you don't have the ear of your best player, you are done. I think Nate has Brandon's ear, and as long as Brandon is buying in, we have a chance to be very successful under Nate IMO.

    Fair enough.

I think you've done a good job of stating your position and think there's some truth in much of what you've written.

I as a non-believer however have not changed my mind. In short (and I could go on and on and on) my biggest gripe is that NM seems to not believe in/trust his players and I think sooner or later that will be his undoing.

I don't see a lot of "joy" or enthusiasm coming from the players this season. I think this is a major factor in Rudy's downfall and think his freewheeling spirit, which was his strength and made him who he was, has been crushed.

I don't like watching this team this year. I find it a chore and a tedious undertaking. In fact I usually just zone out until like the middle of the 3rd. I never get the feeling that if I'm not watching I'm going to miss something spectacular. Last year I did. Almost every game I did.

If they are going to play this SHIT style of basketball, they better fucking win a boatload of games doing it.

Finally my major issue, AND YES I UNDERSTAND THE INJURY PROBLEM is probably at least a minor factor in this... But I can't list a single player on this team that has become a better player this year than they were last year. Not a single one.

just a few things to chew on

Batum is WAY better. However, even being a pro-Nate guy, I would attribute most of that to his international play this summer and work with Monty after he came back.

I certainly think it was clear Greg was improved when healthy.

Overall, I think your beef with Nate that he doesn't develop talent is understandable.
