A couple of days ago I started a new blog. The idea is that on Facebook there are a lot of pics that you see of friends or friends of friends that you want to make fun of. But you don't, because it would be rude. Well, this blog is me receiving pics that deserve to be made fun of and... making fun. And then encouraging others to comment, too. The blog is, right now, in two places: http://meancomments.blogspot.com/ is the main location, and http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mean-Comments/377513821116 is the Facebook location. I'm not sure whether I am going to keep it in both places (I have the Facebook images delayed a day, thinking eventually I could put banner ads on the Blogger one) but if you're interested check out the blog and become a fan on Facebook. Nah. That casts a wider net. It does celebrity stuff and writes mini essays about the people in the images. Mine is JUST a short comment, like you'd leave on Facebook. Ideally, I'll get it set up so people can leave comments that look like Facebook comments. For now it works better on the Facebook Fan Page. Ed O.
I'm split in my mind as to what I want to do with it. Ideally, I'd have a blog that actually can generate enough traffic to get some ad revenue... next-best would be to get some creative writing work out of it... next-best after that would be to get fans to feed my ego... next-best after that (which is where I am now) is to make myself and some of my friends laugh. The easiest thing would be to make it Facebook-only, because with the fanpage (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mean-Comments/377513821116) I make the comment on the image, and it's super-easy for users to make their own comments (or to comment on comments, although it doesn't thread). They can also post wall pictures which I can integrate into the albums... which would then let me and others make mean comments. The issue, though, is that being contained on Facebook is a dead end in terms of revenues. I could get all that I hope to accomplish (from the list above) EXCEPT for ad revenue as a potential. My blog, then, FUNCTIONALLY, should operate like Facebook so people can comment and see stuff... but they'll have to email in images (like with the Icanhascheezburger sites) for me to post and comment on to get the ball rolling. I've thought about making it Buzz-only, too... I'm not aware of any content sources that have done that... but it's not nearly as large as Facebook and the revenue issue seems the same as with Facebook. Ed O.
OK. I've added some, but changed my publishing approach. http://www.facebook.com/MeanComments is where the main posting/interaction is gonna happen. If/when I get up to 500 or 1000 Fans (or people who Like it), I might start posting on a different blog site and just have teasers on Facebook. For now, though? Facebook is easier to post to and Fans (or whatever they're called now) are more engaged there... Check it out. Ed O.
