Too washed up for me, wish the MLS could get someone at least exiting the prime of their career http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/th...an_infusion_this_summer,_led_by_thierry_henry
MLS isn't going to get any star close to the prime of their careers. The best chance they have is to get guys like Henry and Beckham. Catch guys who are huge names who can't (or at least haven't) be superstars at the highest level anymore, but are still terrific players. Henry is clearly coming off a low year, but he's getting limited playing time and he's mostly out on the left. If he was playing as a striker, I think he'd be doing better, but the MLS rumors probably wouldn't be there. The other market that the MLS needs to get into is mining Central America for talent to sell to higher leagues. Freddy Montero from Seattle needs to be the start of a trend. From what I've read, teams kind of dropped the ball on Bryan Ruiz, but those are the guys they need to be getting to get more money in the league. There are a number of guys rumored to be moving to MLS this off-season, Henry being one. Raul, Ronaldinho, and Robbie Keane are among the others. One who is coming is Blaise N'Kufo, who has been brilliant of late for FC Twente as they exceeded all expectations and won the Eredivisie this year.
He's joining Seattle and should be quite the pair up top with Montero, assuming he stays there through the end of the season. I don't know much about him, but he seems like a big strong target man. He should be a pretty solid addition to the MLS. He could give Juan Pablo Angel a run for his money as best DP forward investment.
Well, if Portland get a player like N'Kufo next year, they will be seeing me at PGE Park frequently, thats tight
There are plenty of rumours about of a sizeable influx of Euro's coming to play their retirement football in MLS after the World Cup. I can't wait til I can walk 7 blocks from my apartment and boo Terry Henry.
We gotta get players who are just starting to fall of there in Europe, not players at the end of their careers. Always liked Henry, but he is done.
I don't see Henry as being done. He's done at Barcelona, he's done being mentioned among the top strikers in the world, but if he was still being played as a striker regularly, I think he'd still be producing at the highest level.
Well of course he'll probably be a top striker in the MLS, since we don't really have that many good players here but for top Euro teams, he wouldn't be a starter anymore. (that's what I mean by saying done)
He hasn't been featured at Barca this year but he isn't exactly a shell of his former self--last season he had 26 goals in 42 games. I think he'll do well in New York or wherever he ends up, if he chooses to come stateside.
Some day that'll happen, some day in the distant future MLS will compete for players with mid table teams in the Prem, La Liga, and the Serie A. Occasionally MLS will snare a star player before their skills have fallen off a cliff, some day... MLS is still building it's foundation, it'll take 2 or 3 more decades to become a world class league, but MLS has to become the best league in the America's first. You gotta believe!
Did Henry become Andriy Shevchenko when I wasn't paying attention? He's not unable to score. He's playing against top competition out of position and surrounded by scorers.
Couldnt agree more. That there will be what gets teams some money. The more money they get.. the more they can build the league and start attracting more talent closer to their prime.
Yep! Gotta aim for maybe the Primera Division in Mexico before I even wanna pretend to start talking about Ligue 1, and Bundesliga... let alone Spanish Primera and EPL.
It would be awesome picking up Henry, Raul AND Ronaldinho all in one year. I see a valid comparison of TNA. MLS is picking up talent from other leagues at the decline of their careers; in that respect, they're still developing their fan bases and foundation. The quality of play is slowly rising but still not up to par. At this rate, they should be closing in within 15 years or so.
Its official. Sports Illustrated reports that Henry signed with New York about three weeks ago and some compensation deal between NY and Barcelona is all that needs to be worked out. Henry will join the Red Bulls after the World Cup and pair with Juan Pablo Angel in MLS' best ever forward pairing.
