A bunch of white people saying minorities aren't oppressed. Oh looky here.... happens to be the same ones who go on and on in other threads about being victims of the government. Awesome thread. You people are a joke.
That didn't take long. I think this is the 2nd (edit: It's the 3rd) thing a racist always says. Step 1: "Oh sorry I'm not politically correct" Step 2: "My black friends say....." Step 3: "You're the one who's actually racist"
People of color are not here to teach you how to recognize racism. You should take initiative and use the power of the ultimate, yet incredibly secret, tool called GOOGLE. OddEnormous, A woman's blog who I frequent I believe created this:
What about the lack of Asians and Arabs in film and tv shows? And if they are in films or tv shows, they either play small roles, stereotypical villains, or have their roles taken over by whites? There's such a consistent trend within film and media that it's not really arguable anymore. It's not so different from the black face minstrel shows you used to be able to see at the local county fairs. That's a sign of oppression there. What about having people disregard other cultures because of the cultural differences? Sure, some cultural differences should be disregarded when it comes to making moral judgments but something simply as bowing to another person is regarded as showing inferiority. Why? Bowing is a sign of respect in some traditional cultures as is not looking someone in the eye. Similarly, some people have asperger's and can't look others in the eye and we condemn them because of it. Our American culture has always had a way of condemning things we don't understand. At the same time, popular culture references products and traditions not familiar with minority groups. There is an automatic sense of alienation from the rest of society. Is it anyone's fault in this case? No. But because the majority rules, the products of the masses interferes with the minority and they'll automatically feel left out. In this way, it is oppression from the majority tradition. I'm not saying go blame and critique white people but our country could do a better job bringing awareness to other cultures. And what about when I'm walking with friends on the street and drive-by assholes call us out by racially derogatory names? Yeah, some of them are drunk and others are doing it just because of a group mentality, but doesn't that indicate some form of prejudice underneath? I've had this happen so many times, especially in smaller ghetto/hick areas. And yes, whites are discriminated against with just about every other ethnic/racial group. And yes, I personally think a lot of the racial 'tensions' stem from economic differences rather than pure discrimination. And yes, with the exception of representation in film/media, these don't classify as pure oppression simply because our country has worked hard to fragmentize and alienate racists so that they remain ineffective as a whole. But to ignore these small repeated numbers of racist actions is to ignore the micro-oppressiveness of racist thought and bigotry. And yes, while you aren't racist in any way, to say racial oppression doesn't exist would be to ignore the other side of America, where it does exist on an institutional and fragmentized level. I'm not saying ethnic studies classes are the correct way of teaching. But leveling the ground through censorship isn't going to do any good. In fact, it's worse for minorities who have had crimes committed against them while being ignored by a failed justice system. If, like you said, we're human and all in this together, we shouldn't ignore the colors that people attribute to us because they, themselves, are racist.
http://willcapersblaqueink.blogspot.com/2010/04/black-adversity-opposite-of-white.html http://stuffwhitepeopledo.blogspot.com/ Spend a week, hell just a few hours, reading stuffwhitepeopledo and maybe you will begin to understand how minorities are oppressed, how many white people (myself included) are blind to their own White Privilege, how racism is still very much alive (but just not as blatant anymore), and how 35 years of being treated like humans by white people doesn't just magically erase tendencies that were ingrained in us for over three centuries. A lot of us freaked out on BenDavis for dropping the N bomb multiple times, but just because he was consciously racist doesn't mean a lot of us aren't subconsciously racist as well. We can't just refuse to talk about race, White Privilege, racism, and talk about being color blind when we live in a society that clearly is not. I know it may make us whiteys uncomfortable (SCARY I KNOW), but it is necessary.
Yes, we can. It's a good thing Superintendent Horne is trying to do something about eliminating a racist "studies program."
A good example of whites taking roles of minorities, in particular Asians as you said, is found here: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/new...gallipoli-sniper/story-e6frg6nf-1225862770626
So... you posted a link from Australia and you posted a blog that is a PC circle-jerk, and has the most recent post dealing with people being put in a zoo 104 years ago? I don't doubt for a moment that racism exists, but you're not making a very good case that it does. Ed O.
I was unaware that Australia was not a part of Earth and thus did not sit within the confines of Racist Human Beings. My mistake, Ed O, my mistake. I like how you discount the experiences of the people on the blog I linked. Another sign of White Privilege: disregard the very real experiences of people of color.
Also did you even read the Zoo post or did you just scan the caption of the photo and were like, "THEY ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT BLACKS IN ZOOS IN 1906 LOLLAWL"
Going to the other side of the planet for a story like that is just grasping at straws. Haha. Awesome logic. "If you read this, then you love me. If you don't think you love me it's because love has blinded you." It cracks me up how or why anyone would think that kind of circular statement is supposed to sway anyone. Ed O.
So because the most recent story about it is from Australia that means it doesn't happen here? As you said after: Haha. Awesome logic. It cracks me up how you automatically disregard a blog link when it is clear the only thing you read on it was the caption of a photo (and then decided that is what the entire article was about - something that happened in 1906, when it was not). Be honest: You immediately disregarded the blog without even reading it, automatically assuming it (and thus the experiences) wasn't worth your time. You labeled it as a PC-circle jerk, but if you read it and the discussions in the comment section you will notice it is not PC at all. Most of the discussions are respectful, but there are many people of color sharing very painful and emotional experiences they've had throughout their lives as a result of simply being a different skin color. But continue just reading captions on photos and making snarky comments, Ed. It will do wonders for understanding how minorities are oppressed.
My question was for someone here. Someone that might have some personal experence with being oppressed.
I'm white which makes me a member of the majority in America but I was a minority when I lived in Japan. I had several landlords that refused to rent to me because I wasn't Japanese, although I read and speak the language fluently. I also was refused service at a restaurant because the food was "not suitable only for foreigners". Where you looking for personal accounts by American minorities?
