So all alone in the ocean with no one with days of you and you are supposed to be afraid of people coming up and doing something to you? I am sure there are things to be worried about out there... but people coming up and doing something to you probably isn't one of them.

    She's been found alive.

I don't get the "child endangerment" argument that people are making about this. She has a really big dream and her parents empowered her to follow it.

Should parents of kids who are boxers or football players keep them from participating in the sport because it's dangerous?

If that sport puts them hundreds of miles away from any other person, yes. They should keep them from participating in those sports.

What does she get out of this trip? Besides 15 minutes of fame?

Maybe having her love of sailing and the sea fulfilled with this incredible experience. Maybe being able to turn 40 and not look back on her life with regret over the things she wanted to do but didn't have the guts to do them. Maybe so idiots on message boards like this can trash her and she can laugh at them as she has more true resolve than anyone around here.

why does she have to do it alone? And why does she have to do it at 16? I'm sure she would've liked to vote this year or drive a car last year, but the government says she's not mature enough. But she can take a year off from school to sail around the world alone?

I've been on (relatively) long sailing trips. They can be dangerous. Many, many people have been hurt or killed just doing the jobs they've been doing for years. Weather and seas are capricious. This seems almost abusive to me. Is it really not worth it to sail around the world if you have to have someone with you? Does it totally ruin the achievement?

There's a reason, Denny, that football teams are required to have CPR-qualified personnel and trainers standing by on the field. THere's a reason that boxers have to have doctors at the ring, and first-aid people in the gyms. There's a reason that helmets and safety equipment are required in both.

Question: Who pays for the rescue efforts?

law of the sea states that you render assistance if assistance is required. I don't know who pays. Though salvage prizes (if someone towed the boat back) usually net them 10% of the boat's worth in almost any maritime claims court.
Any lawyers want to chime in? I just know this stuff from the "operator" side, not the legal side

I would guess that the sponsor that paid for the trip/boat will help out.

Seriously, though...I think her family should have to make some type of financial contribution towards the rescue efforts.

So, the problem wasn't that water was breaking over the boat, it was that her water broke?
