Design goal for Portland's PGE Park's future in Major League Soccer: Old school is cool It won't have the sparkle of 4-year-old Toyota Park outside Chicago or brand-new Red Bull Arena outside New York City. But the people remodeling PGE Park hope to send a message to the city and beyond when the stadium becomes a Major League Soccer venue next year: Old school is cool. But Timbers officials say 84-year-old PGE Park carries that intimate, quirky, familiar vibe that attaches to other venerable houses of sport like those for baseball's Boston Red Sox or football's Green Bay Packers. "We want to be the Fenway Park of Major League Soccer. We want to be the Lambeau Field of Major League Soccer," said Mike Golub, who in March became the chief operating officer of the Portland Timbers http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/04/design_goal_for_portlands_pge.html
I think the biggest transition for the Timber army is for the ban on smoke bombs. MLS prohibits smoke bombs. I bet there will be warnings for next season but soon after, lots of ejections.
Its because one of these incidents. http://www.mls-rumors.net/1348/2008...hurled-by-columbus-fans-at-united-supporters/
sorry not saying you are wrong.. maybe I'm retarded, I didnt see the part about banning smoke though. But def stupid by the fans in the article.
Fortunately the smoke bombs are set in designated buckets at PGE park and the smoke blows into the timber army. Hopefully this will work next season. Its all dependent on the League and Merrit. Merrit might be fined if he allows the smoke bombs to be lit off. As you can see a fan threw a smoke bomb onto the field, a staff retrieves it and lets it burn out on the sidelines. This happened in march of 2009.
I can't wait until the States get football fever. I feel like they'd be way more liked in the world. Plus, hooliganism in the USA would be lulz.
I can't wait until the States get football fever. (don't hold your breath) I feel like they'd be way more liked in the world. (I doubt it) Plus, hooliganism in the USA would be lulz. (that's one of the reasons US sports fans hate soccer)
Well, I mean if you don't think it's a reason... And the stadium does look really good. I can't wait to buy season tickets.
Diving isn't rampant I watch quite a bit of soccer and I rarely see blatant diving. Americans do have that impression of soccer though, so you're mostly right.
Where does everyone plan on sitting? I haven't lived in Oregon since early 2003, but I'm coming home for good, and I'd like to sit with the Timbers Army. Season tickets are looking very affordable.
Behind the north side goal is the Timbers Army section, it's all GA. The epicenter is section 107, fun times.
