Mirko Cro Cop is so named because of his past membership with the Lucko Anti-Terrorist Unit, a special police unit in Croatia. Croatia was part of the Socialist Federal Republic (SFR) of Yugoslavia, otherwise known as the "Second Yugoslavia" from WWII until 1992. Yugoslavia was one of the USSR's autonomous satellite states similar to East Germany. Croatia began fighting for independence against Serbian and Soviet influence ("The Homeland War") in 1991. The Croatian Government won control of the country in 1995. During the same period war was also being waged in Bosnia with the same parties involved. During both conflicts war crimes and atrocities took place. It is generally accepted that ethnic cleansing, genocide, and mass raping occurred in Bosnia perpetrated in large part by Croat and Serb forces. Croatian President Ivo Josipovic apolgized on behalf of his country to the Bosniaks just this year.
