Not the most vibrant TV personality, but damn, he comes across as an incredibly sharp guy, and the coverage has definitely improved by having a cap expert on during the draft. Did he harass Bert Kolde? Is that what led to his firing?
I was going to say, everything he's said has been on this site in the last week. Yes, people on this board know more about cap rules than JVG and Stu Scott.
I'm guessing that the posters on this board know about trade exceptions and the like because of Tom Penn's moves. I didn't see anybody on any board even hinting about TEs prior to Penn's arrival in Portland.
No doubt...I know the story of why KP hired him got me studying the CBA. But guys like Story have been doing it much longer.
I don't think anyone knew who the hell he was until he got fired, let alone listened to him about trade exceptions.
I made it a personal mission to shit on him ever since posters on blazers boards were overhyping his cap skills. He was responsible for the ZBO dump and the overselling of Imaginary Cap Space, which I disagreed with.
I'm not saying Penn is the pioneer. I'm just saying he knows his stuff, and he'd be an asset to any organization that doesn't include Bert Kolde having the ear of the owner.
I wouldn't go that far. Z-Bo was being traded, one way or another. You could maybe say that Penn's the reason we have Rudy instead of Miles being gone.
He was traded for cap space 2 years into the future, which was devalued based on the market, hence imaginary. We had to hold on to Steve Francis' contract.
