I will state this again, there were only 2 GMs that were truly in the position to potentially make that decision. The other 28 probably didn't spend/waste much time looking over Oden's health records, interviewing the OSU trainers/coaches, and at the end of the day have to make the actual decision. For instance, if the Suns had that pick with their training staff, there is a good chance Durant would have been the pick. Simply looking at the sad state of our training/medical staff over the last three seasons I think it is clear to say we are way behind the times. I hope the next GM does for our training & medical staff what KP did for scouting and player evaluation. If that happens we are a top organization, but currently we are using blood letting and leaches to solve medical issues.
Yeah, it all sounds plausible, but of course, I'm sure Patterson wants to make himself look good out of all this. And if you ask KP the same questions, he'd probably come with a different story. Who knows what's true, but it's interesting stuff nonetheless.
2006 according to Patterson: Patterson traded for Roy and LMA, Gabriel accumulated all the second round draft picks, KP's contribution was....... Sergio He and Quick need to be on at he same time. LOL
Is he saying that before the Blazers inked him to that contract that the doctors said he only had 18 months on his knees????
Yeah, I think that's what Patterson said. He was ordered from up top to get the deal done, even though he had his reservations about it -- at least, according to him. He wanted to give Darius a one-year contract to see how he would behave off the court as well as see how his knees would hold up. But he was told to give Miles that dumbass contract.
He carefully constructed his statements to say that he "made the calls to the other GMs." If my intuition about Patterson's slimy attitude is to be believed, I think that is the extent of his work in the 06 draft. KP's scouting team was in charge of identifying the talent. On a sidenote, all the FIRE KP people keep citing his supposed penchant for the limelight and how he supposedly took credit away from everyone. But he never went on a show like Patterson just did to try to get credit for himself. And whenever he has spoken of a success story, he has always given credit to his scouting team. Considering how loyal both Buchanan and Born were yesterday in calling KP an "inspirational leader, considering the circumstances," I think way too much undesereved bullshit has be swiped towards KP.
I've been really interested in this interview, and find myself willing to admit that KP might've been very overhyped. But it's horseshit to say this. Come on, you really expect me to believe you would've passed on Oden? It just sounds too self-serving, even if true.
This. I actually spoke with Steve Patterson about a week before the 2007 NBA draft, and he said, then, that he would take Durant. He called him the next big thing. I loved Oden as well, but there is no way you don't draft Durant.
Quick reported this morning that Pritchard negotiated those deals and Patterson was on the phone to close them.
Gabriel is a name I keep thinking about as a potential replacement for KP. I heard the same thing Patterson just said from my uncle.
You're right KP never went on and took credit, but he certainly knew he was getting it and never went out of his way to down play it.
Yeah, that's the one thing that stood out to me, and made me pause to think "Hmm, is what everything Patterson saying true?"
One was in the room with the title of GM, the other believed that Marc was the next coach of the Blazers. Quick has been played like a bitch during this whole ordeal by KP's agent.
If that's the case, then Patterson was merely a Yes Man himself who is now seeking to recraft his image as something other than an incompetent boob. He should have raised Holy Hell about that contract with Paul Allen instead of looking down at his toes, shuffling his feet, and signing a guy he claims he knew was injured. Of course then, he'd have been on Allen's "bad side" and would be fired. Oh, wait...
Did you post about this "conversation" on any Blazer board? I'd be interested in seeing that link. If not, I don't believe a word you're saying.
That's the purest form of confirmation bias I've ever seen around here. You think he's slimy, ergo you think he wasn't responsible for any of the team's success. Look, I think KP did a pretty good job (Nic Batum was all his doing after all) but I just think there's been too much blame given to certain individuals and too much credit to others when the truth is likely somewhere in between.
Is this the same Steve Patterson who flat-out lied about paying Darius Miles' fine after Miles went off on Mo Cheeks? Didn't he call Canzano a liar for reporting it, and then had to eat crow once Canzano came up with the actual document? That Steve Patterson? Yeah, he's real credible.
That's not what I said at all. And making calls to GMs is definitely a job that requires credit. And I find it interesting that you keep harping about how KP gets too much credit, but fail to acknowledge that Patterson was the one explicitly seeking it during this morning's interview.
